Don\'t be dismayed at the number of translators you find when entering the profession.
Make your offerings stand out
First step: have a clear idea of what you are selling
This includes: translating into a particular language, number of words you can handle, other value-added services and your rates.
Provide information on your education, degrees, accreditations, work experience, samples, software applications, specializations, CAT software, etc.
Convey all that information to potential clients: listing your services with ATA, ProZ, etc. (make full use of the profile tools available to you); brochures; personal website
Periodically, during downtimes, send a short e-mail to existing clients, telling them that you are available.
Contact localization companies and offer your services.
Always have an updated CV ready to send at a moment\'s notice.
It is easier to keep good clients than to find them. Therefore, keep clients happy: respond to queries promptly; always meet or exceed deadlines; maintain consistent quality; be proactive; AND: follow all instructions.

I can read some good articles on Translation Journal, but for articles in ATA Chronicle it\'s great to hear from!

In reference to the point about notifying your clients that you are available when you have a slack period - I also notify them when I am very busy - saves them time, too, if they know ahead of time that you will be too busy to take a job.
