Hello,

I am new in the site and having some trouble finding my way. I am looking for proz members in my geographical area - Tel Aviv, Israel, with which I could meet for a short while face-to-face and learn how I should be working. This is important to me because I have subscribed for a trial period of a few months, and I really have to find work soon.

Do you know anyone?

Thank you,

Hadar

Site Guidance Centre may help Mar 16, 2014

If you haven't already done so, I suggest you look at the areas of the site of most interest and help to newcomers to translating, freelancing and/or ProZ.com. The main one is the Site Guidance Centre, where you should be able to find links to all the useful areas. It's here: http://www.proz.com/guidance-center

There are a lot of ways to navigate through the centre, so don't rush it. Make absolutely sure you find:
http://www.proz.com/pages/getting_started
http://www.proz.com/guidance-center/mentoring-program
http://www.proz.com/guidance-center/additional-resources/#webinars
http://www.proz.com/about/translator-scam-alerts/
http://wiki.proz.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

And, of course, make sure you make the best use of existing threads here on the Getting Established forum, and in Money Matters etc.

By the time you've done all that, you'll be ready to ask specific questions, either face-to-face if it can be arranged, or here. Do remember that research skills are among the most important skills a translator can have; in fact, second only to the ability to translate.

Powwow Mar 16, 2014

Hi,

I am in a similar position and understand the worries

I could suggest organizing a powwow in your area of living - a gathering of professionals and starters in the translation industry. This could be very helpful to get you into a community of like minded people.

You are the one to take the initiative and responsibility but I believe it could be very fruitful!

Advice Mar 16, 2014

In 12 years on ProZ.com (3 as Moderator) I have seen too many aspiring translators thinking that just registering on the site will bring them enough work to live on.

But - you have made the right choice to be a paying member. Site staff tell us that the main source of jobs on the site comes from clients searching the directory. As a paying member, you only need 13 KudoZ points in French to Hebrew to appear first in the Directory listing (9 points to be top in psychology).

Your profile is your principal advert. Your experience is very solid but it does take a bit of searching for. Look at some other people's profiles and see if you can make one or two things (like your book translations) stand out more prominently. Clients don't want to spend a lot of time on such things, so first impressions are crucial.

Other colleagues have given also given you excellent advice here.

Questions about Powwow Mar 17, 2014

Powwow is something I want to learn more about, as well. I only know a little about it which I have read here on ProZ. To me, it seems like it is a meeting for translators but I wonder about the following: Can anyone attend it? Do you have to be a member of anything to attend one? What type of discussions do they usually have there (for experienced translators, beginners, both? or something else?) How can you organize one and how do you chose the city?

Thank you in advance.

Improving my profile Mar 17, 2014

Following Russel's advice, should I go on a Mentor program in order to edit my profile the right way? Do the mentors deal with this kind of things or they just refer work and feedback it?

Site Resources Mar 18, 2014

Some mentors may be able to help with this, but it isn't their principal role.

There are several resources to help with profiles on the site, summarised on this page: http://www.proz.com/forum/1103

Right at the bottom, you'll also find this forum link: http://www.proz.com/forum/1103

Somewhere in all this is a place where you can ask other members for critical comments on your profile.

Here is the link:

It is more of a free form, and both start-ups and established translators could take part. To me it is an informal meeting where you could exchange information and experience and actually meet similar people in your area of living. I think as an organizer you would have to find a place to book (or even at your own place could do) where you could meet up. And then it is mainly to meet with everyone who's coming and share the burden.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help Mar 21, 2014

Thanks, Vilina. It was the thing I was wondering about which I asked in this thread since the topic starter mentioned it and at the same time I didn't want to sound too annoying opening a new thread about it.

In a more detailed answer - I don't think you have to be member of anything, except of ProZ.com perhaps, but I suppose you could invite anyone you want, but that would be advertised just on this site anyway. If I am to organize one I would like to gather some info on what the others do exactly, what have they studied, how did they started their translator careers. I thought "why would anyone one to share their know-how, we are competition after all", but I guess the idea is to be helpful to each other and I would happily share my experience. It is to make the translator community work better after all.

About the organization process you could directly ask the staff i.e. submit support request or contact someone that has done that already somewhere near you.

This is my opinion
