Could anyone please tell me if there is a VAT threshold for freelance translators in France, and if so what it is?

Also, is it necessary to have liability insurance if only freelancing on a part-time basis and dealing with agencies only?

VAT: Micro BNC threshold Feb 17, 2005

Hello eva75,

The VAT threshhold is the same for the qualification for Micro BNC tax declarations. As of 2005, it is 27,000 euros per year.
See Howto article http://www.proz.com/howto/209 for more detailed information.

For example, medication instruction booklet.
Agencies should have independent proofreaders, therefore personal liability is almost impossible to establish.

BNC=Benefices non commerciaux Feb 19, 2005

French tax declarations are categorized as to type of revenu.
You are a service provider, so your profits and income are not considered to be commercial. Therefore the classification.

You have the choice of Micro BNC to the limit of 27,000 euros/yr where you are entitled to a 37% general fee deduction,

Or the Declaration Controlee, where your expenses are itemized. Obligatory if you earn more than 27,000Euros/yr.

VAT is connected to your tax category. Basically it's an assistance for people starting out.

Go to your local tax center, the people there are ready to answer your questions, that's their job. When you declare yourself as a tranlsator at URSSAF, they usually tell you to go straight to your local tax office for VAT information.

Good luck

Have a look at www.apce.com Feb 21, 2005

Hi eva75,
You might want to check out the site of the Assoc pour la Création d'Entreprises (www.apce.com) which is incredibly helpful and has a wealth of info on financial, tax, legal and other questions when you're just getting established. It was indispensable to me when I went independent a couple of years ago, especially as my local tax office wasn't terribly helpful.
Bonne chance!
Liz
