Hello,

I am a new french freelance translator, and this is the first time i go to this forum !

I am post graduated in Gestion of Information, and I am also graduated in English and Portuguese linguistics. I have been working in the fisheries sector for 1 year, and beforehand I had been workin for one year in the environmental field. So when I decided to work as a freelance translator, I naturally decided to specialize in those fields.

But, on proz and other sites I never see job offers about these matters. So I wonder now if this specialization is a good idea. Are fisheries, aquaculture and environment good "niches"? Or perhaps you may give me advice to get jobs ?

Thank you very much for helping me!

Yes, but let the potential clients know about you Mar 2, 2005

I strongly believe in specialization. However, if your niche is very small, you probably can't expect getting enough jobs in general marketplaces such as Proz. So, if I were you, I would contact potential clients directly. Also, you will probably have to take other jobs as well, until you build your clientele.

Not too many clients Mar 2, 2005

Dear Ameline,

I specialise in this subject already for several years. To be honest, apart from the old clients working directly with fisheries in many countries, I have not had any new ones. Now my speciality subject has become technical - thre is simply a lot more work in it.

Cheers,
Burrell

well i guess my translator carrer does not begin very well, isn't it? Though i thought i was a good niche, for with the growing impotrznce of europe and of pbs with quotas i would have many clients. Perhaps should i think of a kind of "reconversion"...

Thank you for your advice!

Specific clients Mar 2, 2005

Many international organizations, and particularly UN bodies, are focusing on this issue because of its key importance for the future (or lack of) of our own species. Check out the United Nations Environment Programme website, they have a huge office in Paris!

Good luck,
