Salary increases and specialization

Hi,

I have read that translators' salaries do not tend to increase over time. I suppose (or, at least, hope) that means as compared to the cost of living. Is there any way experience can raise a translator's pay? Does specializing in a certain field help? Once established as a freelancer, is less time spent on advertising/finding clients and more on profitable work?

Thanks,

m/talm

Specialisation is the most important way to increase one's income and establish lasting relationsships with clients.
But it is not impossible to raise the rates either, for instance at the beginning of a year, by some percentage. After all so do all other firms.
Regards
Heinrich
