Working as a patent translator, I sometimes receive patents that are English translations of Japanese originals.

I would like to know whether there also is a market for Japanese to German (patent) translations.

Hello roc_co_co,

Welcome to ProZ.

There is indeed a market for patents from Japanese into German but it is not a very big market. The reason for this is that Japanese companies write their patent not only in Japanese but also provide an English translation at the same time to speed up a US patent application and also the European patent application because the European Patent Office does nothing else but translate the patent into English to see if it should be granted. As the English translations come directly from the Japanese companies, these are commonly used for translation into the other languages of the EU, also because there are simply more translators for English to German and the other languages than from Japanese. The only time the Japanese original is used is when the applicant is a smaller company and doesn't provide a translation.

However, there have been cases where the Japanese companies cheated and provided an English translation that contained addendums that weren't part of the Japanese text. These were in general things that only had been discovered after the patent application in Japan and therefore were fraudulent. Based on this knowledge, the EPO might use the Japanese text more often and disregard the English translation if this comes from the companies themselves. Therefore, there is a chance that this market will grow.

If you should want to enter into this market, the best thing might be to contact the EPO and ask if they have need for a Japanese to German patent translator. I don't know if they will be interested but it is always worth a try.

Good luck!

Ingo
