Among other things, the United Way acts as a liaison to many charities. They let you check whether you like the program of the charity in question before you agree to help them.

UN Volunteers Jan 6, 2008

Also the UN has a website for volunteers:
http://www.onlinevolunteering.org/
I would also recommend looking into your local area resources for interpretation and Translation work. There is always a need for local NGOs to get help for the foreign and immigrant populations, and you would be doing some good in your local community.

TED Talks Translation Oct 11, 2012

I just found this link from TED talks looking from translators - it looks like they are predominantly looking for translators with English as a source language (not target). For beginning translators it also has the advantage that someone else will review the translation.

Hope the link is showing up...

Check out these links Nov 26, 2012

You can check out Global Voices
http://globalvoicesonline.org/for-bloggers/#translation

and Translators Without Borders (I think they are actively looking for Spanish translators)
http://translatorswithoutborders.org/

Also look at Amnesty International's site. As far as I recall, they were looking for someone for Spanish to English translation recently.
http://www.amnesty.org/

Good luck with your search.
