I wonder if any of you has bought one of those newest laptop-models and how do you like to work with them.
I was thinking about buying a Vista laptop with 17 inch screen. I got alreayd used to the fact that nobody produces anymore screens with "normal" format, all have large-screen format, which are ideal for viewing movies but not for working in Office applications.

But yesterday in the computer store I realised, that all machines have highly reflective surfaces! Previously it was standard to have non-reflective screens, but the salesperson said only old models have those, all manufactures now have those BrightView or ChrystalClear or what they call them.
Also Apple offers only screens where you can do your make-up in front of it. And seperate screens too shine like the boots of a Austrian general from WWI.

So I would like to hear about your experiences with new laptops or new seperate screens with reflective surface. Is working on them very unpleasant?

don't like them Jun 13, 2008

Hi Heinrich,

Personally, I do not like these reflective screens. Unless I am working in a dark room, the reflections tire my eyes and makes it hard to work.

I disagree with your vendor that only "old" machines have mat screens. Professional product lines on the contrary tend to respond to demands from non-gaming and non-graphic artist business people for mat screens. A normal 4:3 format, however, is indeed almost impossible to find...

Cheers,

What's the problem Heinrich? Jun 13, 2008

I'm thinking of buying a laptop later this year and I was thinking that a big, wide screen would be great for work... so I was interested to read that you find the widescreen format unsuitable for office applications. What exactly is the problem?

Reflective screen Jun 13, 2008

Hello Heinrich,

I own a laptop with reflective screen. Like you, I thought working with it would be unpleasant, but it isn't, really.
You have to make sure you don't have a light source directly behind you or right above your screen - it will be reflected. Otherwise, I find the picture very clear and pleasant to my eyes.

Widescreen: doesn't make much of a difference. If it really bothers you, you can adjust the size of your working windows. But I think you'll get used to it real soon.
If you have any electronic dictionaries, you could have these displayed in a small column on the right or left of your screen without losing space for your text window.

Normally, less than half screen only is "mirroring" Jun 13, 2008

Now I am sitting near the window in the midday (the window is on the left, I am at 45 deg, facing the adjacent wall. The day is not sunny. Location: Moscow). My chair is not rotating, it is standard wooden chair. So, with my loins not as flexible as they were once, if something happens behind me (e.g. the door opens to ask me something e.g. "Daddy, please ..." ), I may bend forward a little to the reflecting part of the screen, adjust its angle as I like and to reply without having to turn round. And also, on brightview screen, the shots, which have been published without "pre-clearing", are well visible, while on a mat screen you would contemplate a dark spot only instead of human face.
I recommend it (widescreen brightview laptop) as very useful add-on to a powerful desktop machine. Experienced no reflection/screen size-related problem working with any standard office or translation application.

My Macbook Pro (Penrym) has a no reflective screen. And with the multi-touch pad you don't need a mouse anymore.

My best inversion ever

Highly recommended

:.....MacBook Pro makes your ideas even more brilliant with a sharp, high-resolution screen. Choose the 15.4-inch, 1440-by-900-pixel or the 17-inch, 1680-by-1050-pixel digital display, with glossy and antiglare options. Or choose the new, optional high-resolution 17-inch LED backlit model for the optimal viewing experience. The 15-inch and 17-inch LED backlit displays are lighter, more power efficient, and they deliver full screen brightness the instant you turn them on. Both LED backlit displays are mercury-free — and the 17-inch high resolution display is also arsenic-free — so they're better for the environment.

Thanks so far Jun 13, 2008

I found out at least Dell offers mat-screen laptops for business. So the salesperson was indeed wrong.
Unlike Gennady I can do without a mirror, as i'm working alone and nobody will enter the room from behind me. But my window is on the left and the sun starts to shine onto the screen during the winter months after 1 pm. Though I have Venetian blinds it can be disturbing even with a mat screen.

I did not want to buy a 15 inch widescreen laptop, because my 15 inch normal screen laptop is better suited for viewing a text in word using Wordfast. It would cut off too many lines when displaying in 100% view. But with a 17 inch screen I would see more but still not as much as with a normal format 17" screen. Also my digital photos are shot in normal format. This widescreen format is just an invention of the movie-industry, its ok for looking at football or action movies but for those I have the tv-set.

I'm lookin forward for more opinions.

good experience with Dell Jun 13, 2008

Heinrich,

Strangely enough the options for customization differed widely between Germany, the US and UK. The business section of Dell is worth a look. Dell was the only company able to offer me a reasonably priced laptop with excellent performance (for office use of course), a matt screen, a German keyboard and English operation system without extra charge. So far I am very happy with the screen. I can work outdoors as well as indoors, a nice feature for me. Although, I also would prefer the old format instead of a wide screen.

Hopefully you will find the right computer for your needs.

P.S. Also you might want to consider applying anti-glare sticker to your existing screen, whatever its efficiency.

matte all the way Jun 13, 2008

I hate glossy screens, too. They have more vibrant colours but in real life, if you use a laptop as intended (various environments) the reflection is a huge drawback.

My laptop is an HP (HP6510b to be precise, a 14.1") and it comes with matte or glossy screen, your choice. I'd think most or all HP laptops are available with matte. HP's are good, too, although you can't really go wrong with Dell or Lenovo, either. These 3 are probably among the top 5 makers in terms of quality.

BTW wide screens aren't half bad if you like the option of viewing 2 documents side by side.

Dell = HP times 1.6 Jun 15, 2008

On Friday I went to the Euronics store and got an offer for a HP with 17" matte screen and all I need for 992 Euro incl. taxes. Delivery two days.
Back at home I looked what the same machine (with exactly the same components) would cost at Dell and stopped, when the figure without taxes reached 1400 Euro.
In fact also Delovo offers matte screens, but the size stops at 15.4".

I had in mind also Apple, but probably I would run it most of the time under Windows. For that I would have to get Vista lisence and a pc-keyboard, and for using the Mac environment I would have to get MacWord. This would rise double the price compared to the HP-machine.

So one can in fact avoid glossy screens, that's good news. With the holiday season at hand I'll wait still two months with the decision.

Some comments about HP Jun 15, 2008

By the way, I purchased my HP one and a half year ago based exclusively on the discussions here and I am very fond of my choice, although I had to replace their factory programs with my soft: Win XP Pro, MS Office and so on. If you decide to buy HP and to replace their factory programs, be very careful and strictly follow their instruction about first back-up all the factory soft to an EXTERNAL device! In my case, the boys in the store removed factory programs to in-built (internal) hard drive (everything will be OK, just wait a minute, take a cofee please ), and I had one week or two of bad time contacting HP service in Moscow to repair what happened afterwards (it happened that on the hard disk only 300 kb of free space were left and no free space to install my programs. Backed up programs were undeletable from hard drive !!!!). In the long run the problem has been solved with local (not HP) specialists. Now I am looking for a discussion about connectivity of Apple machines to Internet, if there is any problem. I forget everything when I see a 1m screen desktop white Apple with tiny operational unit.

Anti-glare screen Jun 15, 2008

My ex-husband used to market a special anti-glare screen that fitted over the computer screen to eliminate exactly the problem you describe with highly reflective screens. I can't remember the trade name and don't know if these screens are still available. They were made in Scotland.

How about a Thinkpad? Jun 15, 2008

Instead of going into a computer store, you may be interested in purchasing a laptop from IBM/Lenovo. Thinkpad Laptops are still available with standard format screens and are the ideal office laptops (they don't have these very bright displays).

They are also somewhat more expensive compared to the laptops you can buy in computer stores, but I think they are definitely worth their money.
What is more, all Thinkpads come with a 3-year on-site warranty and IBM/Lenovo's customer support is excellent.

I am on my third Thinkpad in the meantime and have been extremely satisfied with all of them.

Looks like you got lucky and the HP version of the config you want happens to be reasonably cheap.
I think Dell laptops are more expensive than comparable HP's but not by a factor of 1.6 for sure.
I'm sure they're not identical though. There always a good couple of differences in battery capacity and software or features you may not care about like a memory card reader, fingerprint sensor, webcam etc, similar parts made by different manufacturer etc. Not that it matters.
