User	Thread poster: Patricia Rosas no CD-Rom on my new laptop: how do I upload applications?
Patricia Rosas   United States Local time: 03:48 Spanish to English + ...	Jun 29, 2009 Yikes. I may have made a horrible mistake. The monsoon season is starting, and I decided to run to the store to get a laptop so that if the power goes out, I can keep on working. I got home with an HP laptop that had all the power I was looking for and lots of other features I wanted. The box says it has a DVD reader/writer. But when I unpacked it, I studied the schematic, and there is no indication that there is a DVD slot and I couldn't find one. So, am I lagging horribly behind the times? Have DVDs shrunk? Also can a DVD read a CD-ROM? If not, how in the heck am I supposed to upload things like Dragon or Office? Thanks!!! Hello Patricia, Sorry to hear about the mess, and I probably won't be able to help you with the main problem (but it could be helpful knowing the exact model of your laptop). Jun 29, 2009 I bought Acer Aspire One netbook with no slot whatsoever, then bought an external hard drive to install the sofware I wanted. She is right. firstly, as far as I know all DVD drives read CD as well. here comes some solutions: 1. you can get an external DVD/CD reader/writer, utilizing USB cable 2. get and exteral HDD, which is the best to store a lot of data, I have been using it for several years coz the cool disk are limited. 3. you can upload your files into a cool disk and then use it. 4. if you are one a network you can use share file feature to do so 5. if not you can connect your lptp and pc via a cable, but you should ask and IT specialist to prepare the cable for you as it is different from the ordinary path cables used to connect to hub or switch, then have fun, I have been doing it for years. External drive or download online Jun 29, 2009 I have the same Acer Aspire One netbook and it doesn't have CD optical drive. Yes you can buy a separate external hard drive and use that to put software CD, I'm sure Best Buy guys can help you out with this, not a big deal, just buy an external drive connect to USB slot in your notebook, very easy. Or, you can download your software from online which is readily available for most softwares. If you already have software CD and don't want to pay extra for online downloading, I guess buying an external drive is the way to go. If it's 13" or bigger it must have an optical drive, really. I don't think HP makes slot loading optical drives so it should have the usual tray with a button on it. Or maybe it came with a separate external drive? Anyway, if it says so on the box, it must have one... or take it back and demand your money back. It's not too hard to get by without an optical drive, but it makes life a bit more difficult than it has to be (some software will only install from the CD so you need to set up a virtual drive or get a USB optical drive, etc. For example, backing up the entire system is a bit more pain than it needs to be, not to mention reinstalling the OS.) Disc image and virtual drives Jun 29, 2009 There are many programs which allow you to create a so called image of a CD or DVD stored on your HD and subsequently use it with a virtual CD drive - en example of a free and very useful virtual drive is: Virtual Clone Drive - http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html Good luck! If it has a DVD reader/writer, you'll be fine - it will be able to read CDs without a problem. However, if it truly doesn't have such a drive, and the box says it should, then the store needs to fix this problem for you, as they have misrepresented the product to you, whether knowingly or not. Laptop DVD drives are usually on the side of the machine - try pressing any buttons you see there, and see what happens (sorry if this is too basic!). Jabberwock   Poland Local time: 12:48 Member (2004) English to Polish	Pen drive Jun 29, 2009 Before you make any other purchases, you might try using your pen drive. In most cases you just copy the installation files to the pendrive and you are ready to go. In some cases, especially if you want to load an operating system from it, it needs special preparation, but I do not think you would need that... If it is not working, you can copy the installation disk image to the pen drive as well (and use it as Stanislaw has described it). Jun 29, 2009 Some laptops have slots, other have trays, sometimes it is almost camouflaged for aesthetical reasons. I'm so overworked, but I finally stopped and went out on the Internet to find documentation on this laptop, and sure enough there IS a DVD, only you can barely see the button. Geesh! Well - congratulations on your DVD :-) Jun 29, 2009 And at least we have created a decent list of tips for those of us who are not so fortunate and don't have CD or DVD installed on their machine. I have impression that machines without one are more and more common especially in smaller models. I think that is not such a tragedy - some time ago I could not imagine having a computer without a floppy disk - by now I almost forgot how it looks like - I think that eventually we are going to get rid of DVD drives as well.
