Emma:
You are a real revolutionary translator working on that threadmill platform! I wanted to know if that was possible, perhaps walking aroound a park or a garden while typing. Now that I see you in those photos, I'm happy to know there's a real chance to integrate exercise and work.
Right now, I use to read in the threadmill. I walk 45 minutes at 5.0 kph with a slope of 9-10 degrees consuming the same quantity of calories than running 20 minutes at 10 kph with a slope of 3 degrees.
Congratulations for your originality! nd thanx for sharing

But...

In a way I think this is quite an interesting idea-- but, I think it also kind of misses part of the point of doing exercise that it's a chance for your brain to switch off from the translation (or maybe let some ideas about the translation percolate, but in a different way).
If you can't afford the luxury of going to the gym/park for an hour and taking a total break from work, maybe you could take your iPhone and listen to the news in your source/target languages as "general language development"?

Allegedly, we are at such a health risk sitting for 8+ hours while working that even a regular exercise ( lasting typically for an hour or two) might not help ( in the long run). That's why I think the Emma's idea looks fine. The whole installation looks like a space ship lol
I don't have a treadmill connected to my desk, but I've tried standing up and simulating walking on treadmill while typing and it feels good. Although I'm not sure how I would involve this in my work as a regular practice.

Thanks so much for sharing

Hi Emma,
I'm really grateful to you. I was searching the forum to start a post about the 'ideal' chair because...
1) I have had a serious back/joint problem for about 20 years
2) I now have IBS as well (worsened by all the sitting compressing the internal organs)
3) I've tried 'kneeling' chairs (knee joint agony for 5 months following a two-week trial, a waste of (a lot of!) money)
4) I've tried special cushions (other pain, IBS even worse)
5) I was beginning to despair...
And I think this is the solution!!!
As I'm clumsy, I might invest in an adjustable desk - I'm too afraid to balance the equipment as you do!!
I actually have been using Dragon (with Trados) for about 9 months and find it really increases output and saves wrist and hand joint pain. For me, it would fit in perfectly to your set-up.
As soon as I'm up and running, I'll post some pictures.
Thanks once again - just proves that Proz is a truly useful virtual workplace!
As to Neil's comment about switching off he is quite right of course in principle, but reality is another thing (unfortunately)...
One question, how do you sit down? Do you slide out the treadmill and slide in the chair? Do you have to move the equipment around each time?
Best wishes
Juliette

TOPIC STARTER
Confession time
Sep 26, 2010
Since this topic has been revived over the last couple of weeks, I think it's only fair to offer a little update here.
The truth is that I am no longer "walking while working".
I did it from February until the beginning of July when it got really hot here in Spain and I found that the treadmill belt warmed up, as did the soles of my sandals. I'm sure this would only be an issue in a hot country. It certainly didn't happen when I was using it for hours non-stop during the winter/spring.
The noise issue mentioned by Milos wasn't too irritating. The treadmill doesn't make that much noise, but now that I have recently changed to a super-silent laptop (from a desktop), the silence is absolutely wonderful, I must admit. And that makes going back to the treadmill a bit harder, even though the summer is over.
@ Juliette: I would give it a go. I have read about people with back problems who have found working at a treadmill to be a good solution. There is a good forum here http://officewalkers.ning.com/
Re: using a chair. I bought a stool at Ikea http://www.ikea.com/es/es/catalog/products/S89850177 so that whenever I wanted I could just stop the treadmill and put the stool on top, without having to adjust the desk height or move the treadmill.
Good luck, Juliette, and looking forward to hearing how you get on

Could be handy on my bike
Sep 27, 2010
I have a bike in my apartment and I have been thinking about proofreading my work on it as there is a kind of control panel on these bikes where I could place a laptop.
This is getting quite feasible as :
I went to the computer shop and saw incredibly light laptops (11" and 13") from Sony and Dell I could easily place on my bike without falling.
Windows 7 has a built-in vocal recognition function, so you can scroll a document without touching the keyboard.
Furthermore, the position bending on the computer would be more natural on a bike.
generally, yes, it is preferable to do something else than working to clear one's mind but, some days, I have no time and if I don't spend some time ont he bike I lose the rhythm and "forget" to exercise the next day, get fat, etc.

I will give it try Emma, and I'll let you know. I (mostly!) live in Piedmont, Italy, where it can get pretty hot in the summer too. But then there are more opportunities to swim, which is a great help. So perhaps it wouldn't matter for the (unfortunately!) fairly short hot period.
