I think this tool can be very useful for hobbyist translators.
People who translate things for fun without commercial interest will benefit from this.
I actually saw some excited messages about the toolkit in a forum about boardgames where people translate the rules of the games so that they can play them with friends who don't speak English.
I think this tool can be very useful for this type of translations.

I am not sure about it. If Google is only a machine, it is not the third party. But it is a company.
2. Are you sure GOOGLE will never do evil?
No one can guarantee.

I am not that any commercial operation whatsoever will never do evil.
Or, slightly less melodramatically, I am sure that every commercial operation will (almost) always act in its own commercial self-interest. Sometimes that will coincide with the customers' interest, sometimes not.
And this applies to Google, Wordfast, and this website and everybody on it, inter alia.

Dear All,
the source language is not a problem anymore, maybe it was at the early stage of this big project, in June.
Arabic, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, English (UK), Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Ukrainian, and Yiddish are now available (http://translate.google.com/support/toolkit/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=152100).
In my opinion, the size restriction is a real problem despite it is nice to work on your own email account for many pratical reasons. It is also a nice storage place despite, as already said, the space is not enough for sure.
Sharing is not on my agenda for now since I do not put at risk my customers' data.
If I have time to volunteer, I will share some personal stuff I personally trust, will every professional translator do the same if Google claims to keep it free???

regarding the NDA issue, I really think that despite we may (the LSP party) add a clause stating NOT TO USE this tool, any panicking translator for lack of time of lack of will (sometimes) would use Google TranslationToolkit or GoogleTranslate without informing the client, of course.It is up to you to make good use of this tool under certain circumstances or to say absolutely NO, and, more importantly, to satisfy your client with your usual output quality.
Referring to the legal issues involved in its actual use, I really think it would become a real CAT tool then, if you mean that an LSP requires a freelancer to work with it.
My company for example only recruits freelancers that owns and manage Trados that is a paid tool as you know, it will never write down in any NDA to use GoogleTranslationToolkit until privacy and quality are really oustanding.

Confidentiality issue....

So the main issue here is the confidential information that Google translator toolkit (GTT) could potentially use by indirect abuse. A possible solution that I just thought when it comes to translation a document in MS WORD, you change on the document "Company A" (same with confidential names and numbers) to "XXX" before uploading it into GTT - which you can easily do on Word by Searching the word and change the word to another name. Have any of you done that? I haven't even started trying GTT, so I will see for myself.

... I would be very upset, if my documents/reports/marketing texts/drafts/whatever were made public EVEN if the name was masked.
