Good morning everyone
I've had this problem before: I copy the ftp address in my IE 6.0 browser, get the roaming flashlight, which roams...forever.
I'm running windows XP pro and have some restrictions on pop-up windows, if that matters.

Can anyone help me, so that I can access my client's document?

Thanks!
Nancy

Get a real FTP client Apr 20, 2004

My best advice would be for you to look for a real FTP client program like ws_ftp, smartftp, or BulletProofFTP (all shareware, i.e. you have to buy them if you use them commercially). A free alternative is FTP Commander, which seems to be quite good and easy to use. See http://www.internet-soft.com/ftpcomm.htm

These programs also have the advantage that they output clear error messages that you can use to figure out what's going wrong and therefore ease troubleshooting.

If you absolutely want to stick with MS IE, try toggling the "Passive FTP" option (see http://department.monm.edu/is/students/support/using-ftp.htm).

I hope this helps!

Best wishes,
Benjamin

Zone Alarm Apr 20, 2004

Nancy,

Si tu utilises Zone Alarm, il pose toujours des problèmes. Je dois toujours le désactiver si je veux aller sur des sites de ce genre pour des téléchargements.

Geneviève:)

Get SmartFTP Apr 20, 2004

You'll never use IE again for ftp.
http://www.smartftp.com/

You can download and install it for free. There will be a reminder when you launch it that if you use it for commercial purposes you should buy a license. Up to you to decide whether your purpose is commercial or not.

Dear tectransDE, Apr 20, 2004

Thank you for your prompt and helpful reply.:-)
I downloaded the ftp client you suggested, but cannot access the ftp site because a password is required, which my client denies. I'm stuck, as I don't really understand this software (technobimbo here).;-)

I went to the ftp.icqstorage.com site, and as per my client's instructions I cliecked File / Login As... with his username and password, and get a message saying I'm timed out and to be sure I have access to the site or something like that.

Try disabling Norton Apr 20, 2004

Hi Nancy.
I had this problem a while back. It took 1/2 hour with a friend of mine (an IT specialist) going through the procedure via the "execute" command in the "start" menu over the phone with me to discover that Norton was in fact preventing me from successfully connecting to the FTP server. In MS Internet Explorer, you get no pop up or other warning that Norton is blocking you!
Hope you are able to connect!
Sara

Passive mode Apr 20, 2004

You probably need administrator rights to change that setting. You should logoff and login as administrator (but you need to know the password - created by you or by the person who installed the OS on your computer).

Your problem could really be caused by not using the passive mode, especially if you are behind a firewall. Be sure to enable the passive mode, whether in MS IE or in a real FTP client.

Firewall/Passive Mode Apr 21, 2004

Yup, I'm with Hynek here.

And passive mode should enable you to keep your firewall running (if you're using one at all) and still connect to the FTP site.

Did you solve the problem? May 15, 2004

Hi, NancyLynn

I had THE VERY SAME PROBLEM! I just want to know if you solved it already. It had to do with some parameters in my internet connection. Please tell me if you solved the problem... if you haven't, I will do my best to help.
Regards,
Consuelo

FTP problem May 15, 2004

Hi Nancy,
No, I don't use sympatico. My ISP is colba.net, here in Montreal.
Ok, I have been trying to remember what it was that prevented me from connecting to my client's ftp site using IExplorer (it has nothing to do with using FTP programs at all becuase I tried that too and I still could not connect). I had the problem last year so I don't quite remember what it was, but I think it was the following: go to Start, settings, network connections, open that folder, then highlight your network connection, right click and select properties, then under the Advanced tab, checkmark "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" and also checkmark "Allow other network users to control or disable the shared internet connection."
Let me know if that solved the problem (btw, I have XP too).
