How to get rid of an additional start-up window in Skype?

Hi folks,
I use Skype v. 5.5.0.113, and each time Skype starts, an additional window pops up. It is called "Skype home", has two tabs ("Skype home" and "Profile"), then a few of my recent contacts, and then an invitation to update my online status of connect to Facebook.
The problem is, that whatever I do I cannot figure out how to get rid of it (I mean, to make so that it would not pop up at Skype start) - any ideas?
Many thanks in advance,
Natalia

No option
Aug 25, 2011
At this moment, I think that there is no dedicated option for disabling the annoying start-up window. Skype developers have received many complaints about this, thus I believe they will include the option in the next release.
The only option, as far as I know, is to uninstall your current version, and download the version 5.0. Before installing it, make sure you disable your Internet connection, so that the installer cannot update automatically.
Hope this helps!
Milos

change view mode

Hi Natalie,
This is part of the new Skype UI. You can use the compact view (first icon on the left in the top right corner of any of the two dialogs) to "merge" the contact list and the tabs window in a single window.
In this view, when you click on a contact, it will show the contact instead of the tabs.

Skype used to be simple, quiet (with the proper settings) and compact.
Unfortunately, it is now growing pachydermic, connecting everywhere to retrieve god knows what and taking up half the screen at startup with info I don't care the least about.
I hope one day, while surfing the already crowded greenness/sustainability wave, the trend will revert to leaner software. Bloated software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_bloat) can really be annoying when you have to actually work with it...
Have a good weekend,
Philippe

Unfortunately, this is not the case: I use the compact view all the time (since ver. 3, I believe).

tabs

Sorry, I meant: the tabs are a new addition...
And the view I was talking about is the default view, not the compact view!
I know what you mean now. I had never paid attention to it, but it would be a nice enhancement: being able to stick to the basics!

This also annoys me.
I don't want a Skype window popping up every time I re-start my computer.

I googled for this not one week ago and I could not find any solution that works. I even tried various ways of forcing the application to load minimised, but it is simply not possible. In the end, I set my Skype out-of-office message to "E-mail me if you want to Skype" and I disabled Skype's autolaunch on my computer. For some translators, that is not an option, unfortunately.
