Hi All,

Can anybody please tell me if there is a good online Thesaurus available? I had an excellent one on my PC, but I have since changed to Windows XP and it is not compatible

Thanks.

This is excellent: http://www.visualthesaurus.com/

I think you can only try it out now (used to free and unlimited). Worth a look though.

2) The One-Look Reverse Dictionary can be used as a thesaurus if you enter a single word (alternatively, you can also enter several words or a phrase). It returns many irrelevant words, but it is easy to scan the list for good hits. This resource seldom lets me down when the "tip-of-the-tongue" phenomenon hits.

3) Lexical FreeNet. Very versatile; not only synonyms but also chains of meaning, connected words and rhyming words.

This is an excellent FREE thesaurus (amongst other things) that can be used online or downloaded. I like it.

Best

Synonyms, antonyms, quotations, proverbs, phrases, as it says on the front.

340,000 synonyms and antonyms
All areas covered (and labelled) from taboo to technical and LOTS in between.

Gives comprenhensive lists of words in some categories - cocktails, minerals, actors, games, chess pieces... insects, islands ...

lakes, lochs and loughs ... languages (2½ pages sorted by continent) ...

Just to take a few at random.
One of the best books I ever bought - it comes off the shelf many times each week.

The paperback weighs over 2kg and it's a great excuse to change position, relax your mouse-grip and avoid repetitive strain injury. Faster and much more fun than most on-line dictionaries.

Don't be fobbed off with anything smaller - I liked the Oxford Compact for a while, which is excellent as far as it goes, but it can't compete with the range of the big Collins.
