I have been requested to work as an exposition interpreter in Las Vegas. I have no clue about tariffs here, it would be nice if somebody could illuminate me

Thank you
Giusi

State Department Rate Mar 6, 2008

What I normally use is the State Department Rate for conference interpreting, and unfortunately I am not up to date on that, nor have I been able to find it on the Net. I have to contact my colleagues who are so certified to get updates. Last I heard it was over $400 per day, but that was a few years ago.

That is plus your transportation, accomodations at the exposition hotel and meals, naturally, and travel time. Do not forget travel time.

...for the hint, but many people, me included, make a distinction between conference interpreter and exposition interpreter, which is supposed to be less engaging, and therefore also less paid.

Now I am not sure exactly what the duties of an exposition interpreter would be, but the State Department also has rates for escort interpreting and one other classification that escapes me for now. They are lower.

However, if this is a travel assignment, try to get good rates, unless of course a paid vacation in Vegas is your ticket, in which case you can low-ball it just for the perks. That also works.

The rate for escort/exposition interpreting Mar 6, 2008

is the rate that should apply here. You might want to get into touch with the administrative bodies mentioned by Henry or simply with other colleagues who are experienced in that field. I do not think that there are official, mandatory rates for this (so this might be completely open for negotiation), but I am not sure. Sometimes it can also be helpful to contact the fair ground administration and ask there. I do know, however, the prices for escort/exposition interpreting tend to be much lower ... See more

I do know, however, the prices for escort/exposition interpreting tend to be much lower than for conference interpreting because - actually - the work is not as demanding.Collapse

Since the tariffs in the originating country (Italy) are pretty low too, probably the client will save or at the end spend the same money hiring somebody from Italy to Vegas. In Italy this job is considered something acceptable by students and young people, because of the low tariffs.
