Hi Gaston, I appreciate your effort, but being Italian and knowing how tricky our fiscal laws can be, and how they change year by year, many times with different interpretations by Italian licensed CPA's, and taking in account the different forms in which you can work as a translator in Italy, I would never venture in this kind of task in the first place. Secondly, I also believe that trying to provide this kind of information goes beyond the scope of this website. It looks to me like a kind of "do-it-yourself", which does not add anything good to the image of the self-employed professional. Already calling an invoice "ricevuta" as you make in the sample is a big mistake. I agree with Giuseppina: it is not a job worthing while being made (except maybe for aesthetics, but you will agree that the look is not the core point of an invoice). My 2 cents [+ 4% for INPS + ritenuta d'acconto + TVA (or not because my income is under a certain value) + marca da bollo in caso di non TVA] ... sorry I could not resist! Manuela | | | I also agree | Mar 24, 2010 |
We have different statements that have to be added to the invoice (in Italian) depending on whether your client has a VAT no. or not and whether it's based in Italy or the EU or outside the EU; then there's a 4% national insurance contribution that's paid by Italian clients but not by non-Italian ones, then there's the point that a few translators at the beginning of their freelance careers could be working without VAT nos. meaning they don't even issue invoices as such, but parcelle, which operate under completely different rules, then there's the other point that even translators with a VAT no. can be working under two different kinds of system, again with different rules... Seriously, you'd be better off not even trying.

I agree with Giusi, Manuela and Marie-Hélène. Translators in Italy can assume many different tax positions, and legislation varies constantly, so it’s practically impossible to systematize the invoicing procedure in one single template. | | | just to add one word | Mar 25, 2010 |
Hi Gaston, I just would like to add one word to this discussion, as seeing it with your eyes you could think we are too proud or just... too Italian, in the meaning that "if you can't be the best all over the world, try at least to be the worst" and, finally, that we are not taking seriously your suggestion. It is not this; it's just that Italian tax legislation is quite complicate and hosts a lot of hairsplitting. If you search Italian forum for keywords tasse - imposta - red... It is not this; it's just that Italian tax legislation is quite complicate and hosts a lot of hairsplitting. If you search Italian forum for keywords tasse - imposta - reddito - fattura - deduzione - inps you'll find lots of threads, discussions and the final answer is often "you must absolutely speak to a business consultant as we cannot help further". Gastón Simple answer: I went to the CPA, which did not even get it right, made a mess exactly with my invoices, giving me wrong instructions about VAT, exemptions and stuff. I had to go to another one to get it right and had to redo all my accountancy. So here we go again Giuseppina

Buona Pasqua a tutti (senza retorica)!
