Here in the office we collect vague and woolly Italian words that are often translated badly (e.g. valorizzazione=valorisation) and I've put them together to make a (fictional) translation test, IT-EN. What do you think?

Italian is not my mother tongue but in the last line shouldn't it be "una collaborazione dedicata e concreta"?

Anyway, the idea is great! Similar test translations could be compiled in the EN ES or IT < > ES pairs as well!

Regards,
Eva

Thanks! Sep 5, 2007

Thanks Giovanni, for fixing my Italian!

Yes, you can borrow the test - I forgot to add "in una logica di condivisione", another phrase I hate.

I would be curious to see a text that contains everything that Italians hate about English... anyone?

Sorry, medical/scientific translations only... Sep 5, 2007

I don't do Jargonese!

That's what I'd reply if that test landed on my desk - although it would have been a different story when I was starting out, of course. No doubt I'd've struggled for hours with the nasty thing!

I'd try and stick in "logiche", "ambito", "anche perché", "articolato" and "interlocutore" to make it really tough, though.

the worst nightmare while _interpreting_! Sep 5, 2007

this is what every italian politician, CEO, diplomat, spindoctor or whatever speaker says when asked whatever question at whatever summit, meeting, interview, inauguration, press conference...

I believe they have classes in this kind of say-nothing-but-say-it-for-at-least-twenty-minutes.
