Hello,
I have a pdf file which contains japanese text. I want to translate / edit that pdf file into english.
I have acrobat reader 6. I am not able to enter the english text in that pdf file using acrobate reader 6.
How to edit a pdf file containing japanese text?
Is there any type of software that can be used to edit the pdf file?
Can anyone suggest me any tool which can be used to edit the pdf file?

Hi,
As you have found out, you can't edit a pdf document using Adobe Reader.
As far as I know, you can't edit a pdf file directly.
What I do when I have a pdf file to be translated, I just translate it in Word.
Yes, takes up time, that is why I hate getting translation work in pdf files.

I had the same problem with PDF file.
If the file is editable maybe ABBY can help you.
However, I received file as picture and there was NO way to edit anything on it.
Maybe japanese OCR can help you as well, but keep in mind that bad scanned file cannot be properly displayed.

There are 2 types of PDF files.
1. PDF file that was created from a MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. file.
2. PDF file that was created by scanning a piece of paper.
If you can use the arrow tool in Adobe Reader to select text, you have Type 1. If you can't, it's Type 2.
Type 1 options:
For Type 1, if you have Adobe Writer, or other similar PDF editing software, you might be able to edit it... I don't know 100% for sure, but I think it's possi... See more There are 2 types of PDF files.

For Type 1, if you have Adobe Writer, or other similar PDF editing software, you might be able to edit it... I don't know 100% for sure, but I think it's possible. With Adobe Reader though, all you can do is read--you can't change anything in the PDF.
If it is Type 1, you can also select the text and copy and paste it into another document (MS Word, for example) to use. All formatting will be lost, but if there wasn't much formatting to start with this might be useful.
There is another way for Type 1: You can try to use a file conversion software to convert the PDF into a MS Word file, or other file. This method typically is not useful though, because it imports the text either as a big image (that you can't type in), or as a million little text boxes, which is not useful either.
So none of these options (except possibly Adobe Writer) are really any good. Maybe someone who has Adobe Writer can tell us whether that works or not.
Type 2 options:
With Type 2, there is no selectable text, so none of the above are going to work. The only option is to try to use OCR software to extract text. However, this method is typically not very reliable, because some characters will import wrong, or some parts of the text may not import at all, so this is not very accurate.
Mostly with Type 2, there is nothing you can do except just recreate it all from scratch in another file format (MS Word, etc.)

Try buying a PDF conversion software and convert the document into a Word file. I use Rich Text PDF4.

e.Typist is an easy to use Japanese OCR package. It works quite well for Type 2 PDFs. You do generally need to change some of the Kanji, but I think it's ultimately faster than creating all the text from scratch yourself.
