A question about Kudos questions.

Can anyone tell me why when I put an answer on the site it shows as a unique answer. When I return to the particular question later someone has posted a similar answer (if not identical) to mine and their answer appears to have been posted before mine? This has happened three times in two days and it would appear to the onlooker that I have plagiarised anothers text, which I know I have not. I find this very frustrating and would be curious to know how this can happen.

Thanks in advance

john

Hi John Jun 4, 2008

Most probably it's the fault of your browser - it happens sometimes to me too (I use Opera 9.26). I usually click the 'refresh' button before answering to check the situation.

Simultaneous answers Jun 4, 2008

It often happens that two people can be answering the same question at the same time and neither is aware of the other's presence until afterwards. Sometimes it can be three or even more, especially if you hang on the question for a little while.

Thank you for a quick reply Jun 4, 2008

Hello Natalie

Thanks for your reply.

After the first time I did refresh before posting, it still happened. Maybe I am doing something else wrong.

Also I am sorry for putting this posting in the wrong place, I had no idea where to put it so I thought "off topic" the safest place to be. I was wrong again, not my day

Thanks again

john

It happened to me while ago Jun 5, 2008

It happened to me while I was looking at my profile with the old version of proz.

It happens to me, too. Jun 5, 2008

I think it's usually because I mull around for awhile with the "post reply" screen up, double-checking dictionaries and whatnot, before hitting the "send" button.
The other day it was particularly frustrating, because after I'd spent about 20 minutes fooling around, when I went back to the question, I found that it been withdrawn by the asker, who had found out the answer to it himself!

Happens also in fora Jun 5, 2008

Sometimes I post an answer to a question in the fora and find later, that someone else has got first, though after posting the other answer had not arrived yet. How this is technically possible I don't understand, but it happens.
Regards
Heinrich

In the fora, posts by non-members are vetted by moderators before being made visible, but are then positioned at the time they were actually written rather than the time they were made visible. That's why you don't see them when you post - as a paying member your posts aren't vetted, so they're visible straightaway.

Still, to my knowledge kudoz answers by non-members aren't vetted, so it's not the same process at work there. If it's not a case of near-simultaneous posting as suggested by others, I have no idea why it might happen.

The email notification, the only reliable source Jun 5, 2008

Yes, I know the situation quite well. Actually the asker is the one who knows who answered first, because there is an email notification for each answer, i.e. the first notification email corresponds to the first answer posted. But to us answerers, the situation is rather frustrating indeed.

As for why this happens, it is due to the fact that Proz.com has several servers serving pages and attending requests. At any moment in time, you are working with one of the servers, while other people can be working with another one. Each of you see only one answer until both servers are synchronised, which only happens after a while. That's the reason why, when you return to the page a couple of minutes later, you see the two or more apparently simultaneous replies.

Same as with Kudoz - Synchronisation of servers Jun 5, 2008

Hi Heinrich. Actually it's the same reason as with Kudoz answers: the existance of more than one server, and the fact that they don't synchronise immediately, but with a certain delay. As a result, the entries from one server are blended with the entries made in other servers, thus resulting in entries appearing "out of nowhere"...
