I was just wondering, how many users are registered in proz, and out of these, how many of them have contributed to the community by earning at least 1 kudoz point?

What impact does this have on 'community'? Dec 20, 2008

Assuming that by 'users' you mean people who don't pay (as opposed to paying 'members'), I don't understand what your point is. In my pairs there are/were wonderful reliable 'users' who have made significant Kudoz contributions over the years. Many of them have now left the site, but there are those who are still here and still contributing.
On the other hand, in these same language pairs there are 'members' who display the site's P badge but who have never made a single contribution to Kudoz at all or have primarily 'contributed' to Kudoz by asking questions, not answering them.
So what point are you trying to make in terms of 'community'?

Thank you for your answer.

My question was statistical and not philosophical, nor political. Hence, there is no "point" I am trying to make.

And by "users" I mean all people who use the site (including members). I guess, one could deduce that from the fact that I mentioned "by earning at least 1 KudoZ point".

Official site terminology is 'users' and 'members'-so you mean all those registered on Proz. Dec 20, 2008

The term 'user' has a very specific meaning on Proz (old terminology was paying and non-paying members). So there was no way I could deduce what you meant.
I think that someone from the site staff will have to answer your question. They have all the stats.

Official site terminology Dec 20, 2008

In fact Spiros is right about terminology.

According to the ProZ.com site glossary:

ProZ.com user, site user, user - Anyone who uses ProZ.com

ProZ.com visitor or guest - A site user who is not a ProZ.com member

ProZ.com member - A site user with a current paid membership subscription

Regards,
Enrique

I got lost when it changed from paying and non-paying members. I didn't realize that the term user is now applied to everyone. So are people who are registered but who don't pay now regarded as guests?

Users: anyone who uses the site

Members:paying users but always users

Visitors guest: not registered users but users as well since they use the site.

I do not understand that people who are registered but who don't pay are now regarded as guests, they are users like anyone using the site. Not?

Best wishes!

Edited for P.S

PS I looked at the glossary it also states:

registered user, registrant - A ProZ.com user with a login account and profile

So, in other words there's almost 20,000 people who have submitted answers but never even earned one point - that on its own speaks volumes.

Just out of interest, could we perhaps have the stats for:

1. How many of those registered have asked questions; and

2. How many of those who have asked questions have also answered them

Thanks
Debs

Very interesting stats, Henry, thanks!

This means that roughly 1 out of 7 people who registered has answered at least 1 KudoZ question and that 1 out of 11 people who registered has earned at least 1 KudoZ point.

I think this could give as a clue about the figure for the site's active users (those who ask/reply to kudoz questions and/or perhaps even participate in the fora).

So, my guess, is that the site's active users are somewhere between 15,000-25,000 (but perhaps one must elaborate on the definition of "active" first).

I replies to Kudoz only if I have spare time.
Reason: Answers on technical terms are responded wrongly [e.g. in EN>TH pair] due to novice translators. This is a specific weak point for Thai: We actually have no authoritative technical translation education course in the country.

Yes! Dec 21, 2008

To Lawyer-Linguist's request. I always raise an eyebrow when I see questions from people who have asked for help say 49 times (or 167 times!) and have never provided an answer (not a single one, not even a bad one just as a way of saving face).

Although I agree that it's better for everyone if we don't have bad answers on the page, this leads me to another question: Shouldn't people in that situation (tons of questions, no answers) be asked to contribute something to the page? A few cents for a special donation fund?

I think this is concise, non-verbose, clear information that it is interesting. Great. Thanks a lot Henry.
