Can the KudoZ term search function be improved? (staff: 'OK, improvements made')

Still nothing done? Jun 24, 2009

OK, let me add another strange phenomenon to the issue of imperfect search engine.
Yesterday I tried to find a two-word term. No search results.
So, I tried Google. And there I found a link to the term in KudoZ.
OK, the word was a part of a 3-word term, but it was enough.
I had not used " " or "match entire phrase" and I am sure there had been no typo or other goofy mistake as I use KudoZ term search a couple of times a week.

However, apparently Google knew better than the internal search engine on ProZ

One more thing Jun 30, 2009

On the topic of user-friendliness, I wonder why the SEARCH button is so much smaller than SEARCH AND SAVE SETTINGS. I have already happened to click the wrong button as a result. Shouldn't it be the other way round?

Hello cquest

It's no surprise to me. Apparently that has been the case for quite a long time, at least that was my understanding ...

No results when searching for "as is" Jul 4, 2009

When searching for "as is" or "as-is", KudoZ term search does not return any results although there are two entries at least:
- "as is" basis: in English to Spanish
- "as-is": in English to Serbian

Search problems piling up Jul 10, 2009

Apparently the Search function is becoming less and less functional
I've just put "whereas" to find no results whatsoever, although if I type "whereas ProZ" in the Google toolbar I get 4 results from a ProZ open glossary. It's getting annoying and undermines the reliability and the essence of this tool here....

I like it now Jul 10, 2009

Now that I've gotten used to the new term search page, I like it better than the old one. I like the fact that the field to enter the term is already highlighted so you can just go ahead and type. I also like that my language pair comes up automatically, but that it's also easy to change it. The only thing I miss is the option to choose an area....tourism, marketing, legal, etc., whatever. That was helpful sometimes.

Looking into issue... Jul 10, 2009

Hi cquest,

The reason "whereas" doesn't return any results is because of a weakness in the search tool that we use (that hasn't changed with this string of update to the term search.) For technical reasons, that particular term exists in a list of "stop words" that won't be searched for (the list includes words like "you", "if", etc.) I'm looking into a way to minimize this list, but there are some technical issues that must be worked through first.

Thanks for your patience,
Colin

Click on "Advanced options" below the "Search" button Jul 10, 2009

It's all there! Simply click on "Advanced options" to see the specific and general fields. You can select and/or deselect them individually as required.

Why are the Specific fields in the Advanced Options not alphabetical? Jul 14, 2009

Or is it just me? I find it really hard to select fields. Perhaps, Colin or someone else can shed some light into this? I don't select specific fields ocassionally but when I do it's a bit of a hassle.

BTW, this is a bit OT but is there no specific field for Photography?

Thanks

Rebekka

Hi Rebekka,

I agree with your suggestion to show specific fields in alphabetical order. And yes, there is a specific field called "Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts)"

Steffen

Please go back!! Jul 23, 2009

Please go back to the way it was! Since the so-called improvement, every time i search very simple terms, I get no results at all.

Can't access replies to question Jul 29, 2009

When I entered a question I got a reply indicating seven answers in two catagories, but only the first one. There was no way of accessing the other answers. This makes the search function -- which is a major reason I subscribe to ProZ, completely useless.

Apostrophes causing inaccurate search results Aug 10, 2009

This may have been a problem in the older version of the Search page, although I certainly don’t remember it.

It seems that any apostrophe appearing in the search box sends the wrong message to the search engine, which stops at the apostrophe itself when looking for corresponding entries.

Thus, “mise à l’atmosphère” yields the following search results, none of which is remotely useful:

• “bouchon lisse mise a l\'air libre(marine)”
• “circuit de mise a l\'air libre”
• “clapet de mise a l\'air libre”
• “électrovanne de mise à l\'air libre”
• “mise à l\'échelle”
• “valve de mise à l\'échappement”

Any way this might be solved? It is quite frustrating.

Thank you.

PS: I should add that the results are the same whether or not the expression is enclosed in quote marks.
