opt-out from notifications from specific users
Jan 17, 2010
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if there could be an option to not receive notifications of Kudoz answers from specific users (the black listed).
Unfortunately, I have come to realize that some of my colleagues choose certain answers (when they have to select between two users that have suggested two equal answers), not because of their references, or because they answered first, but
because of other suspicious factors.
I don't want to make the mistake of inadvertently help those people, and if with the Job notifications we can opt-out of receiving proposals from certain outsources, I would like to see the same option for kudoz.
Thank you.

Criticize the answers, not the writer.

Perhaps I am being nit-picky here, but criticism should be directed at the responses themselves, never at the colleague him or herself.

Another option I would like to see
Jan 17, 2010
I would also like to suggest that there should be a ratio between asked and answered.
For instance, how come a user can have more than 1000 questions asked and less than 10 answered? (And there are users like that)
So, these users are more than welcome to ask for help but they don't care about giving help themselves. For me, it simply doesn't make sense.

I have refused to help 2 of them now.

These people never, never chose my answer, no matter what. (BY the way, I'm among the top 5 of Kudoz scores for the English to Chinese pair.

Do you really want them answering questions?

If someone has asked that many questions, how useful are their answers likely to be?

Kudoz users on the blacklist
Jan 18, 2010
I am with Lisa, if I don't like the question or think that the person in asking too many questions, I simply ignore them.
I also read questions when I want to take a break and am interested in the answers fellow translators give. Some of them are absolutely brilliant.
However, Harry I had no idea that you could filter IN the excellent ones. I had only used the option to filter OUT some things. Thanks for sharing this information.
Have a great week!

Not at all nit-picky

No, you are simply observing the rules!
A linguistic error can be criticised with humour and good examples, and criticism should always be backed up with a polite, or at least neutral explanation.
But criticising the person, referring to non-professionalism etc. is irrelevant and moderators remove comments like that if they find them.
We don´t have time to check everything in KudoZ.
I have no users blocked at the moment - as a moderator I am actually keeping an eye on them instead, though I have not gone as far as to flag them.
But before I became a moderator, I did filter 3 people who annoyed me, and after my term of office ends, I will probably filter three or four again. Not necessarily the same as before - at least one has disappeared from the site.

Noone is picky here
Jan 18, 2010
As I already mentioned on the first page of this topic I still think that helping each other is necessary and only nice and professional.
I have two more names now on my list, they are enemies in my language combination for virtually every participant by now.
Although I must say that some replies are more than rude as they do not qualify the answer but the answerer in such a way that even I thought this was a little bit too 'direct'.
I am not a speciality flower unable to accept criticism or a little push from time to time but it is absolutely out of order that some of my fellow collegues accuse you of not being able to speak one of your working languages properly. Being a lawyer means accepting criticism and fighting for your argument anyway.
I am a specialist translator currently preparing my dissertation for my MA in Legal Translation and I don't think that working, living in England for years and studying now the third postgraduate course at an English University or College of Law does not prove that I am unable to speak the language. When working as a legal professional in an English firm you are nonethelss qualified enough. I haven't seen any comments from this special lady for some time and some of my fellow colleagues warned her off for her rude and incorrect commentaries as I was not the only one to get her nasty wording.
I got my points in the end and I thanked everybody. National antipathies shouldn't be a problem in such an international forum at all. But I have to admit that I was thinking of quitting the forum after some of these experiences.
The problem is that some are hunting for points regardless of style and manners. Although being 'lazy' for some time now (too much work to do) the style didn't get any better.
And this is in my opinion a real problem. We want to help each other and the hunt for points is in some ways contraproductive as the rivalry is sometimes very bad and I sometimes have the suspicion that criticism is only made to 'secure' the own position as an answerer.
This is the same with some of the people questioning. I think someone only asks a question if he/she really needs help and so should be thanking the answerers but leaving no feedback or points is unfair. We want to know whether our help was good enough to solve a problem and whether it was appreciated. We all want to help and we need to learn how to do it. Therefore, we need some feedback.
