probably a stupid question, but what does the column head "cat" stand for in the KodoZ page of my profile?

The column reads "OK" if a detailed category has already been assigned.

KudoZ asker should assign broad and specific field in the first place Jun 27, 2004

If not, sub-categories (i.e. specific fields) can also be assigned retroactively by editing the respective question(s).

Cf. KudoZ asking form - http://www.proz.com/?sp=k2 - showing a breakdown into field - specific, field - broad, and write-in field.
