Split Kudoz Points

Hi, I'm new at Proz and have a question regarding the Kudoz Point system. Is it possible to split the 4 points for the correct answer, i.e. to grant 2 answerers 2 points each if their answers are fine?

Not possible to split points Mar 17, 2006

Hello BT,

Welcome to Proz.com.

It is not possible to split Kudoz points. You should choose the answer that has helped you best and grade it with a point between 1 to 4.

You can refer to Kudoz FAQ for further details, and can also make a Forum Search to read previous discussions on the subject.

Best of luck at Proz.

It would be great if some sort of split were allowed Mar 17, 2006

I asked a question yesterday. 2 people answered with helpful answers and I am equally grateful to both of them. I am on the verge of closing without awarding points simply to avoid the painful problem of having to award points to just 1.

That's exactly what happened to me today!

I just closed the question and gave the points to the answer with the most thorough explanation, although there was another good answer.

I just said that maybe this could be something to add to the Wish List for the next version of the site (?).

The Frequently Asked Questions section has an entry for this issue:

50. ASKING: Can I award points to more than one answer?

No, you may only select one "most helpful" answer. (Things even out for answerers over time.)

Thanks for your question about splitting KudoZ points. This has been evaluated in the past, and it was decided that the asker should pick a single answer to award the points.

The suggested criterion is:

a) Select the answer that was most useful for you

b) Faced with two or more answers equally useful, pick the one that arrived first.

Enrique Cavalitto

Thanks, Enrique!

I understand the (wise) principle behind picking just ONE answer. After all, if we were allowed to pick two, then we'd ask, "and why can't I choose three?" and the discussion would be endless. We'd be back at square one

It's just fun to muse once in a while about being able to distribute KudoZ points among several helpful and devoted people who all contributed to one question

How about browniz? Mar 17, 2006

Could we have the option to give, say 10 brownies to someone who was really helpful, on top of the 4 points or in lieu thereof?

We can't really send flowers or candy so that could be a nice alternative.

Say thank you Mar 17, 2006

In the comments you make when you select your answer, you can specifically thank each of the answerers and commenters whose contributions were helpful.

If it's relevant, you can also point out which aspect of their answer particularly helped you. Not only will it be appreciated by the contributor, this will also provide useful information to anyone researching the term in the future.

In fact, the discussion would not be *endless* as with 4 points to share, there would be a natural limitation to 4 people... I'm facing the situation that two 100% correct answers were given at the same time so I feel it would not be fair to give only one of them the Kudoz points...

I may underestimate the value of Kudoz points but I would DEFINITELY prefer to get some candies for my answers

Reason behind limitation: Open Glossaries Mar 18, 2006

There's another reason behind the thought that we can only give the KudoZ to one answerer: What if we had the possibility to split up the 4 KudoZ on several answerers, this would also mean that all terms the answerers had suggested would be more or less 'correct'.

As a consequence of this, all these terms should be included in the KudoZ Open Glossary - and the chaos in the KOG section would be perfect.

My suggestion: Let's leave it as it is

Kind regards
Erik

Exactly!

BTW, Erik, that's a nice, long signature. How did you add the signature to your message? I haven't found an option to register a signature to appear every time I post something, and I've already looked for it

What I meant by "endless" was that, even though the KudoZ point limit is 4 by now, there could be a situation where there were MORE than 4 perfectly acceptable answers. So then we could ask "and why isn't the point limit raised to 5?" ...or 6 or 10 or 20, ad infinitum.

That would be perfect chaos, as Erik said
