On December 4 Henry promised us \"Speedier KudoZ email service\". Two weeks passed and I don\'t see any improvements, even worse: the lag before receiving KudoZ notification emails is more than an hour (sometimes several hours) in my case.

IMHO when the lag is:

- 3 minutes - that\'s fine,

- 5 minutes - that\'s OK,

- 10 minutes - that\'s not too good but acceptable,

- over 10 minutes - that\'s nonsense.

All LATE KudoZ notifications are nothing else but RUBBISH cramming your mailbox daily. They are more irritating than pornography or astrology spam!

I don\'t want to waste my time so stupidly anymore. I\'m fed up with it. That\'s why I\'ve just excluded KudoZ questions from \"the types of mail I would like to receive\".

BTW I\'ve noticed that less and less old Prozers in my language pairs are still active in KudoZ games. Mostly newcomers are. Perhaps the mentioned problem is the reason why?

Henry, please notify when you\'re able to cope with your own system.

Sincerely,

Nikita Kobrin

Improvements have been, are being made Dec 19, 2002

Nikita,

We have made two significant changes in the email system since December 4, and the time required for an email to reach members has improved over the last two weeks. Platinum members will have noticed dramatic drops in delivery times; since December 4, 99% of platinum KudoZ email notifications have gone out in under one minute. Delivery times to non-platinum members have also improved, I will calculate the latest times and report them for others\' reference.

In addition, on December 4, we released the KudoZ.NET client, which allows users to check for the latest KudoZ questions in your languages and pairs in a matter of seconds. (Even as a \"guest\" member, you are entitled to use this tool until March of next year.)

I hope this demonstrates to your satisfaction that we are working on the problem. Now I have a question for you: why are you only negative in the forums? What do you hope to achieve?

Interesting selection.

Now that would only be true if your motivation to answer KudoZ questions was solely based on grabbing points (as opposed to helping others, and probably even gaining new insights as a result of a proper discussion).

I've certainly seen a major improvement Dec 19, 2002

I\'ve certainly seen a major improvement in the time taken to receive Kudoz notifications. However, now all the Kudoz e-mails say that \"As a platinum member, you get emails first.\". I checked your profile and noted that you are not a platinum member - maybe that\'s where the problem lies.

Quote (Henry): \"Platinum members will have noticed dramatic drops in delivery times. Delivery times to non-platinum members have also improved.\"

I know nothing about the situation with platinum members. As a non-platinum member I unfortunately haven\'t seen any improvements.

Quote (Henry): \"...we released the KudoZ.NET client, which allows users to check for the latest KudoZ questions in your languages and pairs in a matter of seconds. Even as a \"guest\" member, you are entitled to use this tool until March of next year.\"

I personally don\'t like this programme at all. It has too many bugs and works very poorly at the moment. Maybe it will be better by March of next year but then as a \"guest\" member I won\'t be entitled to use the tool. And the things are so (at least at the moment) that I can\'t afford myself to upgrade my ProZ status.

But even if KudoZ.NET worked fine I still can\'t see any practical use of it. If I want to check for the latest KudoZ questions in my languages and pairs I can just go to ProZ.com and check them. Why to use KudoZ.NET? What for? I don\'t understand and can\'t see any advantages.

I\'m interested in properly working KudoZ notification system because I can\'t waste much time for \"checking\".

Quote (Henry): \"why are you only negative in the forums? What do you hope to achieve?\"

Really? It seemed to me that I\'m not only negative: some of my postings are neutral But OK - one can see it better from aside. I\'m sorry if I look always negative. Maybe it\'s because of my character - I\'m not a diplomat.

In fact I\'m very fond of ProZ and the community - I learn lots of new things here, I find very useful links and resources, I get priceless help when I\'m in trouble with my own translations, etc.

I believe that ProZ is the best place for language professionals but I don\'t think that we should only praise it.

Henry, you ask me what I hope to achieve. Nothing special: I want ProZ to become still a better place for all of us where we could work with more comfort. And I see that you try to do the same, to improve ProZ. But it seems to me that your priorities are wrong. For example, you\'ve improved recently the design of the forums. That\'s nice but is it the most important thing right now? I believe that KudoZ email service is of higher importance.

Quote (Ralf Lemster): \"Now that would only be true if your motivation to answer KudoZ questions was solely based on grabbing points (as opposed to helping others, and probably even gaining new insights as a result of a proper discussion).\"

No Ralf, my motivation isn\'t \"solely based on grabbing points\" (though to much extend it is). But do you think it\'s a great pleasure to receive notifications about questions that have been already closed? Do you think it\'s a great pleasure to have an opportunity only to grade the others\' answers? Sometimes I like to try myself in answering too. In another case it\'s not a great fun.

Quote (Alison Riddell-Kachur): \"I\'ve certainly seen a major improvement in the time taken to receive Kudoz notifications. However, now all the Kudoz e-mails say that \"As a platinum member, you get emails first.\". I checked your profile and noted that you are not a platinum member - maybe that\'s where the problem lies.\"

Yes Alison, maybe. But it\'s the first time I hear it. If it\'s true it should be OPENLY stated somewhere that platinum members have such privileges over the \"guest\" members in KudoZ system. And having this information I will decide whether it\'s worth competing with platinum members on such terms or it\'s better to do something else instead.

Regards,

Nikita Kobrin

the English subjunctive mood Dec 19, 2002

Politeness can be expressed in many different and colorful ways in Indo-European languages. Almost all European languages make us of the subjunctive mood. For example, if you want to request, ask, petition for something, or if you want something done and you don\'t want to sound rude, it is highly suggested that you couch your words in the following manner:

\"I would truly want to see done...\"

\"It could be seen as wonderful if...\"

\"It would be very praiseworthy if...\"

\"It would please me to no end if...\"

That magical word \"please\" opens doors with the greatest ease!

Yes, the register is high and maybe too formal and perhaps obsequious but NO ONE will accuse you of being uncivil.

Reading the quotes below:

\"...nothing else but RUBBISH cramming your mailbox daily...\", \"I don\'t want to waste my time so stupidly anymore. I\'m fed up with it\", \"Henry, please notify when you\'re able to cope with your own system.\"

one *might* think that the writer wanted to seem worse than being gracious and well-bred. God forbid! Having lived in Russia, I am familiar how languages are taught. They are taught with great skill. Maybe the writer skipped the lesson in subjunctives? Let\'s give him another chance for redemption and prove that he indeed has been a very conscientious student.

Hi Nikita,

Henry posted the following message on the Translator Co-op Forum on December 4:

\"Speedier KudoZ email service (platinum) Dec 4 9:10pm

To address the lag that some have experienced before receiving KudoZ notification emails, the usual email service has been supplemented with an additional, faster one. The added mailer is fast but is appropriate only for small batches (since the work happens immediately when the KudoZ form is submitted, and the asker must wait for it to complete before moving on.)

The new service has been in operation for one day. Platinum members will have noticed a shorter delay between the time a question was asked and the time notice is received.

Meanwhile, we are working on crafting a more robust general mailer (non-platinum), with the goal of having all KudoZ emails leave our servers within 5 minutes of each question being asked.

As we work to improve the KudoZ.NET system, we will post explanations of changes here. Please comment and provide feedback if you wish. Thanks for your support and patience as we work to improve the site! \"

Which I take as meaning that this improvement currently only affects the platinum members.

Kind regards,

Alison

Thank you Alison, for reminding me Henry\'s posting: now I see \"that this improvement currently only affects the platinum members\".

It\'s a pity but at least as a non-platinum member I can exclude KudoZ questions from my mail until better times. Hope they will come soon.

Nikita

I agree with Nikita Dec 20, 2002

I am also not a Platinum member, but I completely agree with what Nikita is saying.

For most of the translators at proz, the fees for Platinum membership might not be that much, but for people from poor countries, like India, $120 comes out to be 4800 rupees, which sometimes is a person\'s salary for one month.

It is not that easy for us to become Platinum members, but we still would like to participate in the forum and help in whatever way we can.

Improvements also in mail to non-platinum Jan 12, 2003

3 weeks later...

We have made progress in mailing also to non-platinum members. I believe you will have noticed delivery times dropping steadily over the last month, to the point that about half of non-platinum KudoZ emails leave our servers within 3 minutes of a question being asked.

We are continuing to optimize our mailing systems, trying to increase this percentage.

Update Feb 4: 95% within two minutes Feb 4, 2003

On February 3 (a Monday, and therefore relatively busy), 95% of emails to non-platinums left our server within two minutes of questions and jobs being posted.

It can be expected that there will still be off days. But yesterday\'s data represents a significant improvement over the status at the time this topic was posted.
