In their day-to-day professional life, translators and interpreters alike are often confronted with unknown terms that may prove to be a stumbling block. What then? Should they set out on a laborious search back to the origin of the term, even at the risk of reinventing the wheel time and again? Fortunately, from within the thicket of signs will emerge the terminologist, compass in hand, to guide them to the clearing. The work of so many professionals - translators and interpreters, and also editors, jurists, legislators, scientists, researchers - would be a taxing chore if not for terminologists. New multinational bodies -the newly born European Union coming readily to mind - might well become a Babel if they could not rely on terminologists to bridge the gap between concepts. Thus aware of the relevance of terminology for all those who, in one way or another, need to communicate through words, the Instituto de Información Científica y Tecnológica and the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec have decided to devote their Fourth Symposium on Translation, Terminology, and Interpretation in Cuba and Canada to a discussion of \"Terminology at the heart of language activity.\"
We invite all professionals, scholars, translators, interpreters, terminologists, and any others who share our interest in this subject to make their presentations at the event. Suggested topics for presentations are:
· Terminology: an indispensable support for translators, interpreters, and editors.
· Building glossaries and dictionaries: the state of terminotics today
· The training of a terminologist
· Addressing the myriad of new notions and terms churned out by the incessant development of knowledge and human activity
· On-line terminology resources: useful tools. of diverse quality
· Importance of terminology databases for the operation of automatic translation tools and \"translation memories\"
· The critical role of terminology in localization
· Generating, checking and incorporating neologisms into the mainstream
· The \"prescriptive\" function of terminology and the preservation of language propriety
a.. Terminology in science, law-making, education, etc.
b.. The current state of terminology networks throughout the world
You are welcome to join us, as a lecturer or participant, in our discussion of these and other related topics next December 11 and 12, in Havana, Cuba.

Please include your name and address, including country of residence, and the organization to which you belong. You will be receiving a response from the Organizing Committee as soon as possible.
After evaluating all presentations submitted for consideration, the Organizing Committee will distribute a preliminary program by September, 2002. The definitive program will be sent out a few weeks before the date of the symposium.
The registration fee of US$120.00 for delegates and US$80.00 for presenters will be payable at the Capitol the day prior to the event (December 10).
