Can volunteer a discussion group/short practical workshop Aug 31, 2005

On Controlling the Multilingual Mind: Keys to Language Service Provider Assessment/Self-assessment. (Can cover profile analysis/personnel selection if called for. Would definitely involve maximising skills and assets).

This would simply consist of an introduction to basic principles, but to make the most of it, participants' experiences and case studies would greatly enrich its contents. The topic can be tackled on all levels, from beginner to highly-pro and from basic service provider to outsourcer/manager/organizer, so Language and T&I students will be most welcome.

That is, if anyone's interested.

Fees and the best ways of communicating them to clients Sep 1, 2005

Peter Cox wrote:

I would welcome a discussion on fees, in particular on the differential rates applied for non-convertible pdf files, PowerPoint, paper source, out-of-hours work, etc.

Me too.
Plus some useful hints on how to communicate/ justify the various fees to the clients.

Maybe as a short brainstorming session?

CAT and partocularly TRAdOS Sep 2, 2005

I think a lecture or, even better, a workshop on CAT and particularly TRADOS could be of great help to many translators.

A topic that would be interesting to many of us is the recent acquisition of Trados by SDLX.

I would be interested in a lecture that would outline what is to be expected for the freelance translator, what direction the development of the two software packages is expected to take, are we going to see a convergence in functionality, or SDLX will take over the market in the long run, etc.

regards from rainy Budapest,
Csaba

Yes, that would be interesting, even for a novice in CAT tools like myself.

As a novice, though, I would greatly appreciate a WORDFAST training session.

There's one more issue I would like to discuss at the conference, provided there are enough translators interested in it. That would be the role of the translator in translating cultural texts, especially those with a very strong local aspect to them (biographies, autobiographies, book reviews, etc.).

Regards,

Diana

So far, we received confirmation from Yves Champollion, the creator of Wordfast - he will run a WF workshop and also deliver a keynote speach! WF (and other CAT tools) have been always very high up on the wish list of particpants, so I hope it's a good news for everybody

An offer and a suggestion Sep 11, 2005

Hi folks,

I'll willingly do a session on "specialising for fun and profit" again if people are interested. Actually, it might be an idea to do it in tandem with Cecilia/Parrot as self-assessment is an obvious first step if you're going to specialise successfully.

I'd also suggest that a "networking room" be set up in parallel with the lectures and workshops along the following lines:

1) it should have a subject-focused timetable arranged in slots (e.g. 9-10 medicine, 10-11 law etc);
2) each slot should be open to all language combinations;
3) there should be a host for each slot. The host wouldn't be expected to make a formal presentation but could stimulate discussion if necessary. The host might also compile a list of subject specialists who visit the room, or write a short report;
4) the list or report could be circulated to visitors and/or posted on Proz;
5) tea/coffee should be available in the vicinity.

I'd be happy to host networking slots for the subjects that provide me with most of my income, F&W (food and wine) and journalism.

FWIW

Giles

TOPIC STARTER
Draft program posted! Sep 14, 2005

Dear All,
Thank you for your input and program suggestions submitted both here and in private.

The first planned sessions has just been posted at the Conference Info Page. The speakers/discussion leaders should be able to add more detailed descriptions and their bios and participants can sign up for individual sessions. The number of interested participants will tell us which room to allocate for each session. The planned sessions list will be updated regularly and the hourly program will be published later. Those who consider to have their own presentation or workshop or discussion – you can still submit your proposals, there is room for it!

Following Gile's suggestion – yes, it seems a very good idea to enable networking for people who work or intend to work in similar fields. The Oxford experience shows, however, that such networking sessions require a moderator or host who will stream the discussion. We may allocate 40-50 minutes time slots for networking sessions. Down at the bottom of Conference Info Page you will now find a Call for Speakers box – if you would like to host a networking session for a particular specialisation – please volunteer! The broad fields which come to mind (on top of Gile's Food&Wine and Journalism) are: Legal, Financial, Medical, Localisers, Interpreters, EU, Subtitlers, Science, but other suggestions are also welcome.

quality assessment/control in translation Sep 27, 2005

Hi, I only ran quickly through the postings and maybe this was suggested before, but I have always been wondering how QA/QC is performed in the translation business. Maybe somebody can share information on this issue (maybe also about ISO certification in translation, if relevant for translators). I would like to hear if anyone else would be interested in the subject.

PDF files and other electronic problems Sep 28, 2005

Any interest in a talk about how to handle PDF files? How to convert them into editable fomat.
I gave a talk on this at the Oxford conference, and woud be happy to give an updated version in Krakow.

For details, see the Oxford conference

I would be interested in both "quality assessment/control in translation" and "PDF files and other electronic problems" suggested by Peter Linton.

IMPOSSIBLE TO REGISTER!!! Sep 29, 2005

Hi dear organizers!

I´m finding it impossible to register for the conference with my credit card. The whole system goes "in circles", after taking me to the shopping cart it takes me again to the personal data form, then to the bill and then again to the shopping thingy, once and again...

What seems to be the problem? (oops, typical question for a doctor, hehehe!) Until what time is it possible to register tomorrow? (EU time pleazzzze)

A third question is: is it possible to pay through Paypal WITHOUT having a Paypal account? I think so, when I had an account in Paypal my customers used to pay through it with a credit card (just checking).

Thank you! I hope I manage to pay as "early birdy" and join you at the Conf!

See you
