The link Nov 23, 2005

Robert, I tried the link but I get an empty page of Yellow pages.
This is their home page: http://www.podaniolami.pl/
It's located in ul. Grodzka 35, just very close to the Rynek.
A very popular street in Cracow, there's also the Italian Cultural Center

See you all there! 7:30?

Paola

Second room booked. Nov 23, 2005

They at last believed me that at least 35 people will show up. I guess it is an unusual crowd.

The best place to change money in poland are KANTOR! Nov 23, 2005

Jerzy Czopik wrote:

I would strongly advise AGAINST the "kantor" (small exchange office, run by private people). The rate you get there is far lower than the official exchange rate, so even with the cc charge for abroad use you get more money.

I don't know WHERE Jerzy has this information, but the BEST place to change money in Poland are KANTOR! They are private change agency, and the rate is BETTER than bank, much more better!

It's very simply: look at MANY kantor before to change money.

In every moment you can have this situation:
(the number are real examples about today 23-11-2005)

-------------------------------------------------------
KANTOR A: they buy euro at 3,93 PLN/EUR - no commission
KANTOR B: they buy euro at 3,93 PLN/EUR - no commission
KANTOR C: they buy euro at 3,93 PLN/EUR - no commission
(they are the best choice)
-------------------------------------------------------

KANTOR E: they buy euro at 3,92 PLN/EUR - no commission
KANTOR F: they buy euro at 3,91 PLN/EUR - no commission
KANTOR G: they buy euro at 3,90 PLN/EUR - no commission
(they are a choice which is NOT the best, look better around)
-------------------------------------------------------

KANTOR H: they buy euro at 3,093 PLN/EUR - no commission

PAY ATTENTION! they wrote "3,093" so your brain READ "3,95"
you are concentrated to "catch" the good ..93 and to avoid
the bad "..90" and you don't see that is a ZERO more!
AVOID!!!!!
-------------------------------------------------------

KANTOR J: they buy euro at 3,90 PLN/EUR - WITH COMMISSION!!!

This is a place for stupids! In Poland it's normal that
kantor work WITHOUT commission. They earn with difference
between BUY and SELL. i think that only a kantor in
ul. florianska has commission. AVOID!!!!!!!!!!
-------------------------------------------------------

to make and example, in the same moment the banks can change
for you money at this rate: (situation today 23-11-2005)

BPH......... 3,82 PLN/EUR
PEKAO SA.... 3,86 PLN/EUR
WBK......... 3,83 PLN/EUR
PKO BP...... 3,85 PLN/EUR
DEUTSCH BANK 3,86 PLN/EUR
CITIBANK.... 3,81 PLN/EUR

EVERY POLEN avoid bank to change money!

I work also as a consultant for italian enterprise, i had clients which opened companies, they changed more than 20000 EUR, and we checked WHERE is the better rate! And i live in Poland, so i know very well the situation!

SO:

- Avoid KANTOR at Airport (horrible rate)
- Avoid KANTOR open on the night (probably horrible rate)
- Avoid KANTOR which play with "zeroes" (the most of them are in the same Rynek, the market square.
- Avoid to change money inside the bank.

Daniele

Daniele, don't scream Nov 23, 2005

Todays exchange rates for Kantors are (taken from Dziennik Polski, which you should know) in average:
buying Euro at 3,930
buying US $ at 3,340
The official exchange rate from the Polish National Bank was today:
3,9515 for Euro
3,3501 for US $

You have given the example of Kantors, buying at 3,0930 - exactly this was my experience.
And please, read what I wrote carefully. I never advised anyone to go to the bank and exchange money there.
My advice was and still is: use cash machines!
The money you get there will be charged on your accout to the official exchange rate of the Polish National Bank (NBP). Surely, it depends on the type of your card, how much the abroad charge will be. But nevertheless, you will not get a worser rate as at the Kantor. And you are on the safe side.

And if I may note, my experience reaches until 1990, so it is a long time experience.

Regards
Jerzy

My experience with 'kantors' as of today morning Nov 24, 2005

I did not manage to buy Zloty in Ukraine, so I faced the exchange problems too. I can only second the Daniele's advice: check many different kantors and you'll find the good rate. I was a bit frustrated after I saw euro bought at 3.39 in three kantors in a row, but the fourth one offered 3.45 (what a relief! ) and the one just beside it was buying at 3.90! I thanked God for my patience and I was happy.

BTW, the '3.90' one is located right on the Rynek Glowny (Main Square), 39, inside the clothes shop - in case someone would like to cut their search short. Daniele, you listed very good rates, but gave no addresses where to look for these rates. And until I had some Zloty in my pocket, I could not access the Internet...

Anyway, I have my money now, I have not lost PLN 100 to greedy kantor, so I am happy to share my happiness with everybody.
