I just have to share this one.

I have been translating the operating instructions for a food packaging machine.

When I reached the section that addresses messages on the machine's monitor, it occured to me that unless my translated terms match those of the client's software house exactly then the instructions won't be worth diddly squat.

I called my client and explained the problem and they sent through a number of bitmaps of actual screen images.

The first one that I picked at random reads as follows:

"23 seconds - This time is started at the same time that the collectbuffer (bel) has started to drop. If this time has expired the weiger [sic] is allowed to drop again.

If this time is set shorter then the "collectorbuffer (belt) run time" the machine can be able to run faster. But take care that the droppings don't get mixed up"

Well that all seems to be pretty clear - if you're pyschic

"Droppings" in a food factory?

What chance have I got??

I agree... pretty humorous terminology. To be honest I am often shocked at the volume of people (hundreds of which are Proz.com participants) that advertise themselves as XX>EN translators with glaring deficiencies in their written English (things like "many people thinks that...", etc.).

Sounds like an important project. If your client really cares about quality I would offer to edit part one so that the final result is useful for its intended purposes.

Good luck!

Todd
