Lumsdun Jun 27, 2011

The name of a chimney sweep in Edinburgh - for those who don't know, a lum is a chimney in Scots.

My all time favourite Jun 27, 2011

is UPS.
In Danish, this means woops. Not exactly a good name for a transport company, is it?

And what about Jun 29, 2011

Mensa, the association for people with high IQs who are not aware that "Mensa" is Spanish for "Stupid".

lemon = enUS Jun 29, 2011

Hello neilmac,
I asked myself the same thing.

Slang is, of course, particularly liable to be different between UK and US. My Collins and Oxford included this meaning and I decided that was enough for a forum post. Good to know that it is largely unfamiliar to many UK speakers.

The automotive industry is emphasized as one of the agency's specialties.

Sincerely,
Michael

Translate server error Jul 1, 2011

Not a translation company, but an all-time favourite nonetheless.

And how about the LICS logo? Mar 7

The Australian Language Industry Certification System has, to my mind, a rather unfortunate logo in which the wave pattern line across the globe makes the C look like another letter entirely!

(I'm not sure I'd trust the output of a company certified by LIES)
