O' course, half o' those West Riding expressions doen' mean nowt to me, as "Yorkshire" int a single dialect. All across God's own cun'ry we all speak differen'ly. Ah o' all those expressions, 't only one ad o' used 'd o' been "lughole" (bar pronouncin' t' 'h' o' course!). In York wid seh "now then" rather than "ey oop", for example.

Translation: Of course, half of those West Riding expressions don't mean anything to me, as Yorkshire isn't a single dialect. All across God's own country (Yorkshire), we all speak differently. Out of all those expression, the only one I'd have said would have been "lughole" (without pronouncing the 'h' of course!). In York we'd say "now then" rather than "ey oop", for example.

Long live Yorkshire!

In case you're interested, here are the words to our rather amusing national anthem (source: http://www.stockdill.freeserve.co.uk/moor/ (homepage=www.yorksview.co.uk)):

On Ilkla’ Moor Baht ‘At.
(On Ilkley Moor Without A Hat)

Wheear 'as tha binn since ah saw thee?
On Ilkla Moor baht 'at
Wheear 'as tha bin since ah saw thee?
Wheear 'as tha bin since ah saw thee?

Hi Yorkie! Oct 8, 2004

Today Kim Metzger opened a thread elsewhere in the forums, probably in the Off-topic, on singalongs. You might want to exchange bawdy (or not) tunes with him!
