Hilarious! Jun 28, 2007

"Only U.S. citizens may legally vote. In order to become a naturalized American citizen, our laws require that you demonstrate "an understanding of the English language, including an ability to read, write and speak . . . simple words and phrases . . . in ordinary usage in the English language."

At least we know where our tax payer money goes...

Let's not forget those exempted from this requirement Jun 28, 2007

Language
Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who on the date of filing:

* have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for periods totaling 15 years or more and are over 55 years of age;
* have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for periods totaling 20 years or more and are over 50 years of age; or
* have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn English.

There must be a great number of people in this situation.

What about English being the official language of the US? Jun 29, 2007

Not long ago, many people were asking for English to be the official language of the United States. Whatever happened to that? When the right hand doesn't know what the left hand's doing... two horses running in different directions will only tear the cart to pieces.
