OK, there are linguistic parameters, and extra-linguistics parameters ( culture, politics, conventions).
This is what linguistic science concluded :
When a verbal message goes from a sender to a recipient, and it is successfully passed onto and comprehended by the recipient = it indicates that the sender and the recipient speak the same language.
That said, I have never been in a situation that I needed a translator when I was either in Serbia or Croatia ? Science and common sense suggest that I would require a translator to be able to communicate with Croats and Serbians, if they spoke separate and different languages, right?
Btw, UN knows better than you and me. And in UN conventions, it is neatly categorized:
Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian or B/S/C
as same language.

I can NOT understand Slovenians, ........., and Serbian is my native language!

And by the way, when I went to school, in former Yugoslavia, I was taught that we speak Croato-Serbian language.
What happened to that one? Where did it dissapear?

Yes, definitely, as for S-C goes, the differences are merely stylistic, and plenty of politics involved in the matter.
OK, we also use two different scripts, which does not exist in English, for example.
