Dear All,
was wondering if the expression "mmmmhh" is universal or where it is not used.

I have not yet met anyone who does not understand "mmm", but I have experienced that different cultures use different tones and tunes to mean different things. I don't think you can have a fruitful conversation about "mmm" without sound files, because I can only guess why you write "mmh" instead of "hmm".

... but here it's generally spelt "mmm" (the h is dropped). And the number of m's you use is arbitrary.

In order to judge on the matter, we would need to know what you want to express with "Mmmh". Is it delight, doubt, ommision of some word you don't want to say, agreement... Please let us know.

I used 'hmm' in a 'discussion' with an artificial intelligence http://www.titane.ca/concordia/dfar251/igod/main.html .
The next reply was that 92% from the writers spell "hmm" with a single m so the rest of 8% are exceptions
It is a funny program, relaxing...
I spell "mmmm" without "h"... We use it in Romanian for expressing that something tastes good.
What do native speakers of other languages use it for?

I think it probably is, as it's the natural thing to do when you've just put something delicious in your mouth and you want to express your delight without opening your mouth!

Mm with lips put lightly forward means good, mm with lips drawn to the sides means doubt.
But I wonder if this is true for instance in Japan too. At least in movies they make all kind of strange sounds that we Europeans don't understand at all.

Hi everyone,
We would right "Hum"! | | | |

"Mmmm" or "Hmmm" or "Mmmmh", can have at least four meanings, depending on the intonation.
One would be delicious, of course; but a second one could be something like "this is a problem" or "this is annoying"; and yet a third one, if "pronounced" like a question could be "what?", "what, are you saying?", "what do you want?". Now, if pronounced with a kind of exclamation intonation, it could mean "Oh, I get it now", or something of the sort. Come to think of it, people use a lot of "mmmm" with different intonations to mean different things.

Generally, mmmh will be understood anywhere.
However, if you write MMM in capital letters, for a Russian it will remind of the name of the company which built a financial pyramid and cheated the bulk population of this country in ‘90s.
As for hmm, it means maybe, maybe…
As for the examples provided here:
Mmmmhhh! Lecker...
Mmmmhh, it is quite dubious
A Russian instead of mmmmh will say
Oh! Yammy оr Ooh! Yammi (In Russian O!Vkusnyatina! or OO!Vkusnyatina!)
Hm will be used same as in Hm, it is quite dubious.
Igor
