Two questions I ask in this blog.
1) I remember in this film I saw, Corky Romano, there was a scene where the main character was supposed to be acting as a translator between a Vietnamese guy and a Thai guy (even though he doesn't speak a word of either Vietnamese or Thai - it's all too silly to explain). Anyway, when the Vietnamese guy or the Thai guy said anything in their respective languages, it was, of course, always subtitled in English; but you could watch the film with subtitles of one of a variety of other languages playing. Let's take Greek as an example. Imagine, just for a moment, that you are a native speaker of Greek and that you can speak fluent English; and you have a task to translate something into Greek, which is in English, and it is something that you know has already been translated from Vietnamese or Thai. When I think about it, I just don't think I would always and unconditionally translate from English - I may choose to have someone else translate samples from the original Vietnamese / Thai version straight into Greek, if I could... do you understand what i am talking about?
2) I remember how much I used to enjoy learning languages as a child. While I am starting to realise my limitations now, I remain a confident, as well as capable, linguist; which is presumably what coerced me into asking the world this question: what are the odds of someone agreeing to learn a new language if they don't know what that language is?
