Hello,

I need help with the following: is there a "Habsha" ethnicity and is that the correct word to be used for a person's origin? What other ethnicities exist in Ethiopia and Eritrea?

Any help will be appreciated, thank you

Regards,

NB: In Arabic, Ethiopia is called Habasha, an ethiopian is Habashi (man) and Habashiya (woman).

Shirin
The correct word is Habasha not Habsha and the equivalent in english is Abbyssinia, it is the the land of todays Ethiopia and Eritrea, major spoken and written languages are Amharic (Amharinja) and Tigrinja (they pronounce them Amharinya and Tigrinya respectivly), the word Habasha is old and even some people there regard it insultive, so be careful when using the word Habasha, if you search the web for king Selassie, Haila Selassie or Abbyssinia you will find a lot of material about Habasha.
cheers
