Some paragraphs on Translation (Peter Newmark)

Below some of my favorite paragraphs dealing with the minutiae of translation and taken from Newmark's book: "More paragraphs on translation" (Multilingual Matters, ISBN 1-85359-402-4).

Feel free to consider these an invitation to talk about our ‘things’ or just food for your own thought (or a 'teaser' to buy the book, ehem...no, I get no 'commission').;-)

Two paradoxes of translation

The more difficult it is, the more interesting it is, and the worse it will be paid (e.g. poetry and other literary translation).
The easier it is, the more boring it is, and often, the better it will be paid, by the number of words.
