Dear all,
I'm looking for online sources (articles, books, research works etc.) on the history of the Chinese language (preferably in Chinese). General info would be appreciated as well as any specific info on the history of lexicon, grammar, phonetics calligraphy, etc. Does anyone happen to have come across any good ones?
Thank you very much in advance!

Just one link among many others Sep 14, 2004

Hi Vera,

I just did a short search on google (language china online "joseph needham") and one of the 781 (!) hits I got seems to quite interesting:
http://members.aol.com/TeacherNet/AncientChina.html

It's a general outline of Chinese history and culture and there's quite a lot about culture and language.
Unfortunately, Needham's Science and Civilization in Ancient China is not available online which certainly is one of the best and most comprehensive studies about anything connected with China (vol. 7 pt. 1 deals with language but the whole work is really worth reading!).

Good luck!
Charlotte

Thanks! Sep 14, 2004

Dear Charlotte,
Thank you very much indeed for the link! Found a lot of interesting information there.
Unfortunately the info on the language itself is only very general there.
Sorry, i haven't made it explicit: i'm looking for more or less in-depth analysis of the history of the language. I mean the phonetic evolution, evolution of the grammatical structure, deviation of the written form of the language from the spoken one, the development of the lexicon etc.
Thanx once again!
Sincerely,
Vera
