Piet Hein is a great Dannish poet. I'd like to post here some of his grooks and I would like to see some rhymming translations. Here goes the first one, just to start:

WHAT PEOPLE MAY THINK

Some people cower
and wince and shrink,
owing to fear of
what people may think.
There is one answer
to worries like these:
people may think
what the devil they please.

I'm not quite happy with the 2nd part, as it's failing to reflect the sense of the last 2 lines .... but I'm working on it:-)

But it DOES rhyme:-)

LO QUE PIENSA LA GENTE
Algunos se acojonan
Se encogen y se estremecen
Con miedo a lo que piensan
Los demás.
Hay una respuesta
Para los acojonados
Que vayan a la mierda
Los demás.

人的所思所想

有些人畏缩不前
犹豫不决,
是害怕
人们会怎么想的缘故。
对于这样的担忧
只有一个答案:
人们大概在想
他们所取悦的魔鬼吧

Here goes my humble try (into the soul of Portuguese)...

Pelo que os outros possam pensar,
Há quem se acobarde, hesite, se encolha...!
Só há um remédio p’ra disto sair:
As pessoas que pensem o que lhes der na bolha!

Lia Fail Feb 2, 2009

Hi Alvaro

I was offline for nearly a week, so pardon the delay. I loved the idea, it's a pity so few others took up the challenge, but thanks Angeline:-)

Lia Fáil means "sword of destiny" in Irish, altho' someone did point out what it might be interpreted as in an anglophone world ... but there's more than English in the world; it might even be something even worse in some other language:-) I'm guilty of having ecluded the "fada" (the accent on the "a").

Have you got another lil' one to challenge the grey matter?

Signed
Ailish - an Irish name, anglicised from Aibhlís and meaning "hospitable, generous":-)

My try ... Feb 3, 2009

Alvaro

Thank you! Here's my try.

人家要想...

有的人退缩、
畏缩、哆嗦,
因为怕人家
会背后嘀咕。
对这种烦人感
只有一种说法:
人家可以随便
见鬼去想吧。

Renjia yao xiang ...

Youde ren tuisuo,
weisuo, duosuo,
yinwei pa renjia
hui beihou digu.
Dui zhe zhong fanren'gan
zhi you yi ge shuofa:
renjia keyi suibian
jian-gui-qu xiang ba.

What people will think

Some people retreat,
shrink back, shiver,
because they fear people
will behind their back mutter.
To this kind of annoying feeling
there is only one thing to say:
people can please themselves,
what they go-to-hell think ba.

(吧 ba is a tone particle for emphasis)

Hi, Thank You All! Feb 3, 2009

Hi, Thank You All!

I think this topic is warming up!

I have lots of other Grooks, but I was giving Lia Fáil some time for her second try (you said you were “working on it”, remember, Ailish ?).

So, perhaps Wednesday I’ll post a new one.

By the way, you can search for more Grooks using Google search entering “Piet Hein”, Grooks but I’m afraid if everybody starts posting Grooks in this same thread it would turn into a mess.
Everyone can always open other new threads about Piet Hein in this forum…

And I'm glad to see this one is getting richer and richer...!

Hugs,
Álvaro

My effort Feb 4, 2009

Uh-oh... (my first reaction). It might be better (more aphoristic) in Classical Chinese ... Here goes anyway, in the common speech, putonghua:

永久双胞胎

把娱乐
只不过当作娱乐
和‘严肃性’
当真
表示着您彻底是
二者
都不
懂的。

Yongjiu Shuangbaotai

Ba yule
zhibuguo dangzuo yule
he 'yansuxing'
dangzhen
biaoshi zhe nin chedi shi
er zhe
dou bu
dong de.

Everlasting Twins

Taking fun
merely as fun
and 'seriousness'
seriously
shows that you thoroughly are
the two
not
perceiving.

Of course! Apr 18, 2009

Here's my version of "What people may think":

L'ALTRUI PENSIERO

C’è chi, per timore
dell’altrui pensiero
si fa piccolo e trema,
ritraendosi invero.
E la soluzione
a simile affare
è che gli altri pensino
quel che gli pare.
