I've just seen a job posting with such a requirement and got startled a bit. Sure a customer may demand what he/she wants to but shall a translator demand some common sense from the customer?
I imagine calculating full matches in the Raven by E.A. Poe!

Could save the client lots Mar 17, 2009

If, e.g., the poem is one of Getrude Stein's with lines like

Pale.
Pale.
Pale.
Pale.
Pale.
Pale.
Pale.

or "a rose is a rose is a rose", I'd certainly consider using a CAT tool...

Pale.
Pale.
Pale.
Pale.
Pale.
Pale.

just imagine the imminent inconsistencies here if CAT usage was discarded! *shudder

(Perhaps they have more projects than their poem and thus ask for a CAT. Or they're planning different versions for online, direct mailing and waiting room materials. )

People are not guilty that they were born stupid, be gentle with them Mar 17, 2009

Of course you should take such jobs. Think of the reader, it will be her/him you should bother about. Always say "Yes, yes, yes" to the client, if he wishes to believe that CAT tools are able to perform that kind of sophisticated jobs - do not dissapoint him. Play with it, say you have CAT tools + your own methods to use these tools as they have to be mastered.

Did you think it could be a mistake only? Mar 17, 2009

We all do mistakes some times, there is no perfect human being on the Earth... May be the person who posted this job was simply mistaken and selected Trados instead of Word for instance?

Why do you ridicule people without knowing their reasoning behind this request?

It's always possible there is no particular reason; maybe they just used a standard job request form.

But why would it be a bad idea to use a CAT tool to receive a bi-lingual file for proofreading and editing later?? That task is much easier done if you can go line by line through the text (without losing sight of the context, of course) and compare source and target than having to skip bac

That task is much easier done if you can go line by line through the text (without losing sight of the context, of course) and compare source and target than having to skip back and forth between two separate documents, particularly if it's a longer poem.

A CAT tool is not only useful for repetitions and fuzzy matches!

And I may be a monumental numpty, but quite honestly I cannot see any drawbacks to translating a poem using a CAT tool. Sure, it might not help a great deal (although Heike points out that it could) but to read some of the responses on here, you would think the outsourcers asked for it to written in the blood of the translator's freshly slain first born.

Perhaps someone can help by explaining to me why it is such a dreadfully horrendously bad idea?
