There are books we love, and we read them a hundred times.. in the original language, and in the translated version. There are these books we read and we think:"I would have been the perfect translator for this book.." Have you a dream like this? Are there books you think would have been even better if you had the chance to translate them?
I have many dreams of this kind. One example between many: all of Jeanette Winterson's novels. The Italian translator is great.. but how I wish I could open the book and read: translated by Giulia Cordelli.

I've done it, though not much Jun 1, 2011

For me, it's not the feeling that I'd translate the book/movie perfectly but rather the desire to make a translation available to those of my friends who can't read/watch it in the original. Unfortunately, I don't find much time for that, so to date I've only subtitled one movie ("Mediterraneo" by Gabriele Salvatores) into Russian, translated a few short essays, and barely started working on two books - John Steinbeck's "Sweet Thursday" (this one has been translated, but the translation is rather bland) and "Marathon monks of Mount Hiei" (about the Tendai school of Buddhism).

Translated by mom... Jun 1, 2011

The best thing about translating books for me is when they've already been published, and you're walking down the street, pass by a bookshop and your kids scream at the top of their lungs: "Mom, mom look, it's your book!!" Seeing them so proud is the best feeling ever!

Harry Potter Jun 2, 2011

I may sound childish when writing this, but to be frank, I don't care

I love Harry Potter, and can't wait to start reading it to my little girl.

However, how much better would it be to be reading her the translated version, translated by me? One can but dream...
