Verlan Oct 20, 2011

Faïza Guène is a young French-Algerian author who uses verlan slang in her writing. At least a couple of her books have been translated into English by Sarah Ardizzone.

... this one is already on my list! I did a module in French Canadian Literature at university and this book, along with one or two other interesting ones, was on the reading list.

Thanks very much for the suggestion though, I'm still very grateful for your assistance!

What about songs? Oct 20, 2011

For a non-conventional French Canadian masterpiece, listen to Le bon gars (and other songs) by Richard Desjardins http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RTHckra_Gc

For you non-native Canadian francophones, a multi-faceted challenge: the accent (try to catch the sentence: "j'vas apprendre l'anglais, j'vas l'apprendre pour de vrai."), the vocabulary and the cultural references.

You might also read the lyrics of some of Desjardins' songs (including Le bon gars) http://www.allthelyrics.com/lyrics/richard_desjardins/

Have fun.

Jean-Pierre

Galina, aren't these in Ukrainian?

They are not in pure Ukrainian but have many Russian words mixed up and twisted a bit (or a lot). Like, every other word is Russian or changes according to Russian grammatical patterns. I'd say that it's not Ukrainian at all but then it would mean that these works are in Russian and they most definitely are not.
