Thanks to Evert and Aurora, maybe I can help to unravel the secret by translating part of the review. I thought the small part of the bilingual texts I typed was eminently understandable en enjoyable. But remember it took Joyce 17 years to write this book! So don\'t be surprised if it would take some time to understand it. I think that in addition to the now translated Dutch, it helps to be a Continental European who understands several languages.

I know by heart the places he like to saale, deddurty devil!

Ik kan de plekken waar hij goorloopt wel dromen, den dommelse does!



to saale is not an English verb it does look like to soil, but I believe borrowed from the French here. I also like the way the translators were able to repeat the alliteration in the staccato of \'d\'s.

In writing his books, James Joyce did not work according to a pre-arranged masterplan, but built up his texts from his notes. He put these notes together from a enormous number of wide-ranging sources: hundreds of books, pamphelts, newspaper and magazine articles.
