Hay Festival in Cartagena

Welcome to Hay Festival in Cartagena. This Fiesta was born out of a conversation with the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes, a regular guest at our Festival in Wales. He recommended Cartagena de Indias as the perfect home for a celebration of Latin American culture, and has guided the project to fruition.

We are deeply grateful to him, to our guest of honour, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and to all our friends in Colombia, and on both continents for their encouragement and support.

Great writers articulate truths about the world that make us understand it anew. They give pleasure and share that most valuable treasure: stories. We are thrilled and honoured to welcome all our guests. Thank you for joining us in these celebrations.

Cartagena is also the setting for a new collaboration between Hay Festival and Metal, who are organising a programme of workshops and events with visual artists to complement the literary festival.
