Does anyone know who was it that said something along the lines of "every poet should also be a translator" i.e. should also translate poetry? I believe it was a prominent American or English writer. I remember a professor quoting this once in a course I took, and I'd like to use the quote in a presentation I'm giving this weekend.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Yvette

Hi Yvette. Do you mean this one. It's a quote by Jane Kenyon.

Two quotes about poetry and translation Feb 2, 2006

When I read your question, I immediately thought of these two quotes.

I don't think they're exactly what you're looking for, but maybe they can help

"Poetry is what gets lost in translation."
--Robert Frost
American Poet (1874-1963)

"But nothing's lost.
Or else: all is translation.
And every bit of us is lost in it"
-- James Merrill
American writer (1926 – 1995)
