"To discuss the art of literary translation is to a large extent to mystify it if we disregard the unruly manner in which it has been practiced throughout history. For although writing between two different languages has always been integral part of national literatures and the exchanges between them, the most striking, the truly captivating thing about it is its variations rather than any single characteristic or aspect."

Read on at:
http://www.literarytranslation.com/art/

The article is structured into Introduction, Theory, History and Contemporary translation.

Also of interest is the "Workshops" section, which publishes studies on specific issues in targeted language combinations. A sample of the topics tackled:

- Issues in Arabic translation
- Subtitling Almodovar
- Asterix
- Emotion in Pessoa
- Swearwords in "Trainspotting"
- The Bible
- Lev Loseff (Russian)
- Tavaru (Tamil)
- Sappho and Catulus: sexual politics
- Peter Høeg (Danish)
- etc., etc.

Hope you enjoy it!

I used to get their listserv (as a lurker) and when they moved to a site format, I lost them.

All the best,
Terry
