Folks, let us guess who might win the Nobel Prize for 2007.
Last year, we had a very pleasant surprise--Orhan Pamuk, someone whom I knew as a writer before he got the Nobel.
Any ideas, this year?

The winners are announced this Thursday, it's very exciting.
I have to root for the Latin Americans. I was just talking about this with two people, I would be a very happy person if either Mario Vargas Llosa or Ernesto Sabato wins the Nobel this year--or any year for that matter. American Philip Roth is also one of my favorites.

...I had heard that Bob Dylan was nominated for the Literature Nobel. For years he has been considered one of the major voices of our time, so I root for him.
My personal preference... ;-D

Wow! from that list, Dylan is the LEAST likely to win (he's a the bottom of the chart....sigh... it figures, I always choose the losing horse).

True, there never is a list of nominees (because there are no official nominees), only media's' lists of potential nominees.
A few days ago when I saw a list in a Swedish online broadsheet, the readers' two main contenders where Thomas Tranströmer and Joyce Carol Oates.
Tranströmer, being Swedish, is an obvious choice for Swedish readers, Oates less so.
I doubt that any of these two authors will be selected as they are quite well known (in Sweden). The basic rule sems to be that that the person awarded the Nobel prize for literature is generally unknown (at least in Sweden).
Even so, I've got my money on Oates.

I hope John Updike gets it but he probably won't. Margaret Atwood and Joyce Oates are good candidates. Darn, I know very few of the non-English writers! So many to read, so little time!

Margaret Atwood - just to rile US and keep Phil Roth and John Updike sit and wait. Or a poke in somebody elses eye: Salman Rushdie.
EDIT: actually I changed my mind: I'd root for Alice Munro. Margaret would not mind, I guess.

My personal favorite would be Umberto Eco, followed by Haruki Murakami, Carlos Fuentes, Mario Vargas Llosa and Margaret Atwood. They would all deserve it.

The man definitely deserves a lifetime achievement for his poetry and songs (the same thing, in his case).
But then I'm biased... I love Cohen and all his works.
