Hello all,

We are working on utilities for translation/localization and would like to know what people think of having to download the .Net framework or Java runtime in order to run such programs.

This has also been an issue for us on the OmegaT project, since OmegaT uses the Java Runtime Environment.

It has the advantage of making the application itself very small (OmegaT is a download of about 1 MB) and of cross-platform portability.

The disadvantage is that users clearly dislike having to interrupt the installation process in order to download and install a different application.

If the application is supplied on CD, the solution appears to be to licence the JRE for distribution on CD together with the application.

If the application is to be downloaded, the solution is for the installation routine to detect the need for installation if appropriate, and to connect to the Sun server and perform download and installation automatically. This is what we're hoping to implement for OmegaT.

Marc
