Hello Friends.

I was wondering if anyone working with any of those languages would be kind to share some experiences about how user-friendly the various CAT Tools are as pertaining to Arabic and Hebrew.

I'm taking a course whereby we are now learning to use ACROSS (TRADOS is next), but it seems like the alignment doesn't work well with Arabic. Also, some extra undesired characters get added to the source when imported from WORD, and the Arabic is not clear at all. Speaking of which.....What are some good PDF converters that people have used? I use this http://www.doc2pdf.net/PDF2Word/#convert , but when it comes to bullet point and numbering, it seems like the text gets all discombobulated....

Although technology and myself have not always been the best of friends, I'm really trying to find a tool that would prove the efficiency and expediency of process that a CAT tool promises.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Ethan

I have been using Nitro Pdf Professional for more than a year now and it does a stellar job at converting pdfs.

I can't comment on CAT tools, as I currently don't use them but on the PDF>Word issue...

I have found that ABBYY Finereader does a remarkable job with reading Hebrew PDFs, even dead ones. It still requires a cursory check (as you would anyway) but it works beyond what I expected.

The downside of this is that ABBYY is a bit pricey, I've tried other OCRs, for example the free OCR with Wordfast Anywhere and they don't compare with Hebrew characters. In my opinion, the expense is worthwhile.

Arabic might be another story.

Download the trial version of ABBYY finereader and give it a go. (with Arabic & Hebrew) before shelling out any money.

Thanks,
Ethan

No Ethan, Nov 8, 2011

But I use it successfully with Romanian and Portuguese diacritics and accents - the word documents are always spotless - so I thought Nitro might do a good job on more ''complicated'' languages as well

Sorry it didn't work out:)

I found this which might help: http://wiki.arabeyes.org/Arabic_OCR

It includes links to Arabic OCR software, one of which (http://www.irislink.com/c2-1684-189/Readiris-12-for-Windows.aspx) is called ReadIris 12 Pro Middle East which specifically supports Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi etc. I have just discovered this so haven't tried it yet and so cannot attest to its effectiveness.

"Arabic, Farsi and Hebrew recognition
Only available on:
- Readiris Pro 12 Middle-East
- Readiris Corporate 12 Middle East"

Hope it helps.
