  • Don\'t be dismayed at the number of translators you find when entering the profession.



  • Make your offerings stand out



  • First step: have a clear idea of what you are selling



  • This includes: translating into a particular language, number of words you can handle, other value-added services and your rates.



  • Provide information on your education, degrees, accreditations, work experience, samples, software applications, specializations, CAT software, etc.



  • Convey all that information to potential clients: listing your services with ATA, ProZ, etc. (make full use of the profile tools available to you); brochures; personal website



  • Periodically, during downtimes, send a short e-mail to existing clients, telling them that you are available.



  • Contact localization companies and offer your services.



  • Always have an updated CV ready to send at a moment\'s notice.



  • It is easier to keep good clients than to find them. Therefore, keep clients happy: respond to queries promptly; always meet or exceed deadlines; maintain consistent quality; be proactive; AND: follow all instructions.



  • \"You must be willing to put forth a consistent effort in order to ensure a steady flow of work in the coming months and years.\"

In reference to the point about notifying your clients that you are available when you have a slack period - I also notify them when I am very busy - saves them time, too, if they know ahead of time that you will be too busy to take a job.
